The money would complete construction of the new Montvale Elementary School and finish additions at Jefferson Forest High School and Staunton River middle and high schools. Construction bids for those schools exceeded the county School Board's 1994 estimates by about $3.2 million.
The bond money, from the Virginia Public School Authority, also would be used to cover architectural and engineering fees for construction and additions planned for elementary schools in Stewartsville and Moneta, as well as an elementary school proposed for the northeast part of the county.
A public hearing on the bond application will be held Sept. 25.
In other business, the board:
Voted 6-0 to transfer $30,000 from the county's contingency fund to cover the costs of publishing the city-county consolidation agreement in newspapers. A three-judge panel is scheduled to decide today in Bedford County Circuit Court whether the consolidation referendum should be placed on the fall ballot.
Voted 6-0 to hire a Richmond attorney to look into who's responsible for repairs needed at the county's old landfill, which suffered $150,000 to $500,000 worth of damage during the June floods. Mudslides from the landfill also damaged surrounding properties.
The Federal Emergency Management Administration has put a hold on reimbursing Bedford County for repairs to the landfill, which has been closed and filled, until it can determine if the architect or contractor who designed its closing can be held responsible for repairs.
