HELTON, COVINGTON WIN OPENER

Joanne Helton scored a game-high 18 points to lead Covington to a 50-47 victory over Stuarts Draft on Thursday in a non-district girls' high school basketball game in Covington.

Charley Laws added 14 points for Covington (1-0).

Stuarts Draft (0-1) was led by Joanna Ratliff, who scored 13.

Lord Botetourt 85, Alleghany 57: The Cavaliers took an early lead and never looked back as they defeated the Mountaineers in the Lord Botetourt Invitational.

The Cavaliers were led by Sarah Hicks with 20 points, Katrina Elliott with 19 and Sara Moore with 17. Alleghany's leading scorer was Katie Craft, with a game-high 23.

Botetourt meets R.E. Lee-Staunton in the championship game at 7:30 tonight. Magna Vista will play Alleghany at 6 p.m.

George Wythe 70, Fort Chiswell 55: Megan Johnson scored 11 of her 17 points in a decisive third quarter run as the Maroons ran away from the Pioneers in a non-district game in Max Meadows.

George Wythe (1-0) outscored Fort Chiswell 18-7 in the third to break a halftime tie. Tabatha Cook led the Maroons with a game-high 19 points. Lisa Garland and Tonya Cregger added 10 each.

The Pioneers (0-1) were led by Kristen Harman and Amy Coleman, who scored 13 points each.

Brookville 60, Liberty 53: At Liberty, Kristie Fisher scored 24 points in the second half as the Bees broke a tie to down the Minettes in the opener for both Seminole District teams.

Fisher led the Bees with a game-high 33 points. Megann Morris added 15.

Felicia Miller paced Liberty, scoring 15 points and pulling down 11 rebounds.
