TENN. GRAND JURY INDICTS TRUCKER IN I-81 SLAYING

A Greene County grand jury on Tuesday indicted a North Carolina trucker accused of killing a woman at a truck stop along Interstate 81.

Sean Patrick Goble, 28, of Asheboro, N.C., was indicted for first-degree murder in the strangulation death of Brenda Kay Hagy, 45, of Bloomington, Ind. He also is charged with murdering two other women he met at truck stops.

Hagy's body was found Jan. 23 in Washington County, Va., about 60 miles from where Goble told authorities he killed her in Tennessee.

Authorities tracked Goble down after a plastic bag with fingerprints that matched his was found at the crime scene in Virginia. He has records for misdemeanor violations.

Goble also is facing murder charges in Jefferson County and in Orange County, N.C. He is to be tried first in Jefferson County, although no trial date has been set. His trial in Greene County is scheduled for Jan. 16.

The victims were known or suspected prostitutes who frequented truck stops. Authorities in several states say Goble may be a suspect in similar slayings.

He was arrested in April in North Carolina and is being held without bond in Jefferson County.

Berkeley Bell, Greene County prosecutor, said that whether he seeks the death penalty likely will depend upon the outcome of Goble's trial in Jefferson County. An aggravating factor required for the death penalty would be a previous murder conviction, Bell said.

``Right now, I don't have the basis for seeking the death penalty,'' he said.
