A spirited ``fox hunt'' lasted more than two hours Friday night, but the pack of hungry dogs lost its prey.
Cave Spring's Jason Fox, a senior running back, repeatedly found the hole, scampering for 87 yards and two touchdowns as the Knights trounced Martinsville 21-0 in a non-district game.
The Bulldogs lost three first-half fumbles, suffered a blocked punt, and fell victim to a fake field goal as the Knights scored all three touchdowns before halftime.
The game was the first of the season for Martinsville, a Group AA school, while Cave Spring, which competes at the Group AAA level, is 2-0.
Bulldogs coach Taylor Edwards, who has won 113 games and a state championship at Martinsville since 1982, realized his squad was outmanned.
``Right now, our problem is numbers,'' Edwards said. ``We're lining up with 30 kids, and seven of those are JV. We may have to take a look at [not] playing AAA schools anymore. Tonight, certainly, Cave Spring was bigger and stronger.
``We made too many mistakes. Our youth showed up. And then it seemed when we were in a position to score, we'd leave the ball laying on the ground.''
Cave Spring's first score came on a 49-yard, seven play opening-quarter drive. Fox carried four times for 26 yards, but the big play was a 20-yard pass from Jeff Lang to Billy Frantz.
The Knights scored twice more in the second period. After blocking a Martinsville punt, and recovering on the Bulldogs' 6-yard line, the Knights gained only three net yards on three plays.
Cave Spring's field-goal unit came on the field, but Lang, who lined up on the line of scrimmage, streaked into the backfield, took a toss from the holder, and threw a pass to a wide-open Greg Wells in the end zone.
``That play's part of our package,'' said Cave Spring coach Steve Spangler.
Just before intermission, Fox ran 13 yards on a third-and-10 delayed draw for the game's final touchdown.
Martinsville had difficulty advancing the ball against Cave Spring's beefy defense. The Bulldogs were limited to five first downs and 119 total yards. Martinsville's Marco Turner led his team with 54 yards rushing on seven carries.
