With a little more than three minutes to go in the fourth quarter and Liberty trailing by four, Stevens took a handoff at the William Campbell 4-yard line but lost control of the ball. Generals linebacker Robert Adams returned the fumble almost 35 yards to seal the victory.
Dominique Dews led William Campbell (2-0 overall, 2-0 district), scoring on the ground from 1 yard and in the air from 2 yards. Adams was on the receiving end of the touchdown pass in the second quarter.
Lee Fisher split the uprights in the first quarter to put Liberty on the scoreboard first, and Stevens scored on a 7-yard touchdown run in the second quarter for the Minutemen.
Despite the loss, Liberty (1-1, 1-1) held the yardage advantage over William Campbell 270-198. The Minutemen's J.J. Coles completed 10 of 22 passes for 163 yards, 136 of which went to Gregg Reynolds on eight receptions.
George Wythe 32, Castlewood 14: In Wytheville, Randy Belcher rushed for 108 yards on seven carries - including a touchdown - and Jason Smith found the end zone twice to lead the Maroons (1-1, 1-0) past the Blue Devils (0-2, 0-1) in Hogoheegee District action.
James Roberts led Castlewood, scoring two touchdowns and racking up 119 yards receiving. David Owens added 62 yards on 22 carries for the Blue Devils.
Fort Chiswell 38, Galax 7: In Galax, the Pioneers (2-0, 1-0) used solid efforts on both sides of the ball to defeat the Maroon Tide (0-2, 0-2) in the Mountain Empire District.
Gary Arnold led Fort Chiswell in rushing with 108 yards on 20 carries. Adam Morgan passed for two touchdowns and 127 yards on nine completions.
The Pioneers totalled 347 yards while yielding 188 to Galax.
Patrick Henry 24, Magna Vista 7: The Patriots scored a season-opening non-district victory behind stout defense and a solid rushing game.
Dan Ankoma scored two touchdowns to cap long drives and Kevin Washington added a third score at the end of a sustained march as PH scored in each quarter.
Gus Joseph opened the scoring with a 25-yard field goal in the first quarter for the Patriots.
PH's defense snuffed one Warrior threat after the offense fumbled away the second-half kickoff. Magna Vista's touchdown came against the Patriots' reserves when Travis Preston scored from the 10 with six seconds left.
