LICUL'S GOALS LIFT VA. TECH IN SOCCER

The Virginia Tech men's soccer team got two second-half goals from Stanislav Licul to defeat Temple 3-1 in an Atlantic-10 game in Blacksburg.

After Temple (0-1) took a 1-0 lead, Tech (3-1-1) tied the score on a header by Ernie Scerbo before Licul provided the second-half scoring. Tech goalkeeper John Sexton had one save against a Temple offense that managed just four shots.

In other soccer news:

The Roanoke Star Under-12 White team won its second tournament of the fall by beating the Vienna Thunder 2-0 in the championship game of the Pepsi/Arby's Autumn Chase Soccer Classic in Bristol.

Stephen Morris, who scored five goals in the tournament, and Tommy Hagen provided the scoring for the Star. Defensemen Eric Weisbart and Mike Bachmand along with sweeper Nick Schmidt anchored a defense that was not scored upon in the tournament.

The Roanoke Star Under-15 White team defeated the Roanoke Star Red 12-3 in a shootout to win the championship at the Pepsi/Arby's Autumn Chase Soccer Classic in Bristol.

Tom Ashton, Andy Starr, Travis Kyger and Phong Doung were named to the All-Tournament team. The Roanoke Star White team outscored its opponents 12-3 while the Red team outscored its opponents 7-1.

Michelle Bowman scored two goals as the Washington and Lee women's team defeated Jersey City 3-1 in Lexington. Karin Treese had a goal and an assist for the Generals (1-1).

Mary Cummings scored two goals to lead Rochester past Roanoke 4-0 in a non-conference women's game in Geneva, N.Y.

Kara Hedges and Kari Richardson played well in goal for the Maroons (2-2). Hedges had 11 saves and Richardson finished with four.

Roanoke's men's team defeated Ferrum 4-2 to capture the Domino's Soccer Classic on Saturday night at River's Edge.

Shane Greene scored two goals for the Maroons (2-1). Kenneth Howe and Michael Carey scored for the Panthers.
