CHRISTIANSBURG - Following is a list of times and locations for voter registration sites for this week. Voter registration will continue through Oct. 7. The last day to register and to make address changes in order to be eligible for the November election is Oct. 10. The last day for receiving applications for mail ballots is Nov. 2. Nov. 4 is the last day for in-person absentee voting.

Volunteers reorganize
BLACKSBURG- The volunteers of Smithfield have reorganized as the Guild of Smithfield to more accurately reflect their volunteer mission to serve historic Smithfield through preservation, interpretation and community education. Smithfield is located in Blacksburg, next to the Virginia Tech campus on Smithfield Plantation Road off Duck Pond Road. Service to the community is a strong pillar of the mission as well, through seminars, lectures and special events.
Three events are open to the public this fall. On Thursday, at 10 a.m., Beth Cheuk, assistant to the president of Monticello will give a seminar, "Monticello Today." On Nov. 9 at 10 a.m. , Guild Chair, Ann Edel, will present "Virginia Metalcrafters - Making an 18th-Century Craft Today." The annual "Holidays at Smithfield" open house is Nov. 30 through Dec. 3 featuring candlelight interpreted tours, a Tea Shoppe, and a holiday greens sale.

Voices in Harmony
RADFORD - Voices in Harmony youth choir will have auditions for Montgomery County residents ages 9-14 Thursday, Sept. 14, and Friday, Sept. 15. For times, call 831-5265.
Auditions for residents from other areas, including Floyd, Pulaski and Giles Counties, will be at Radford University's Powell Hall Room 110 Saturday, Sept. 16, from 10 a.m. to noon.
This year, the group is combined with the Montgomery County Girl's Choir, creating a choir open to singers from a larger area.
Beautification winners
BLACKSBURG - The winners of the 13th annual civic beautification contest will be announced Thursday, Sept. 14, at 7:30 p.m. in Town Council chambers in the municipal building.
Thirteen winners will be honored, ranging from individual homeowners to businesses and other organizations.
Nominations were accepted in July and three judges then inspected the 50 to 60 entries.
Conference at Tech
BLACKSBURG - A 9th District telecommunications conference will be held on Sept. 25 in Squires Student Center on the campus of Virginia Tech from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The conference, in cooperation with Virginia Tech, is sponsored by Rep. Rick Boucher, D-Abingdon, and assisted by the Blacksburg Electronic Village and the town of Blacksburg. Speakers will focus on the comprehensive telecommunications reform legislation which is poised for passage in Congress and examine the plans to offer the combination of cable television, telephone and data services over common networks by some of the leading national companies. Other presentations will address Internet issues, the telecommunications recommendations of the New Century Council, the status of the project launched by Boucher's office to provide fiber optic-based distance learning in Southwest Virginia's schools, and the potential for other 9th District communities to acquire the services available in Blacksburg through the Blacksburg Electronic Village.
