DUBLIN - A forum for all candidates running for office in Pulaski County will be held at 7 p.m. Sept. 28 in the new Edwards Hall Economic Development Building at New River Community College.
The event is being hosted by the Pulaski County Chamber of Commerce for candidates in both contested and uncontested races. Hiawatha Nicely Jr., chairman of the chamber's Legislative Action Committee, will be the moderator.
In county offices, Democrat Ralph Dobbins is being challenged by Republican Norman Dowdy for sheriff, and Republican Everett Shockley by Democrat Byron Shankman for commonwealth's attorney. Commissioner of Revenue Maynard Sayers, a Republican, and Treasurer Rose Marie Tickle, Democrat, are unopposed for re-election.
On the Board of Supervisors, Republican Bruce Fariss is being challenged by Colbern Linkous, an independent, in Ingles District; Republican Ira "Pete" Crawford by Democrat Charles Cook in the Draper District; and Democrat Frank Conner and Republican H.A. "Andy" McCready are seeking the Massie District seat being vacated by Democrat Mason Vaughan. Robinson District Republican Jerry White and Cloyd District Democrat Joe Sheffey are unopposed for re-election.
In School Board races, Barbara Chrisley is challenging Ron Chaffin for the Ingles District seat; Rhea Saltz is challenging Sybil Atkinson in the Robinson District; Jeff Bain is challenging Dr. Nathan Tuck in Massie; and Beth Nelson is challenging Carolyn Brown in Cloyd. Draper District member Lewis Pratt is unopposed.
Library events
BLACKSBURG - The Montgomery-Floyd Regional Library celebrates National School Success Month at the Blacksburg Area Branch Library Sept. 19, from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m.
Kids and parents can learn how to use a pathfinder, get helpful book lists and explore ways the library can help kids have a successful school year.
The program is free to children in Montgomery and Floyd counties.
Program on Indians
CHRISTIANSBURG - A program about American Indians will be offered at the Christiansburg Headquarters Library Sept. 18 at 4:15 p.m.
Art Hoover and members of the Rebirth of a Nation will present "An Indian Story," to children in kindergarten and older. The program will feature dances and stories about life on the reservation.
The program is free. Seating is first-come, first-served.
Rotary study exchange
RADFORD-Rotarians from Winchester to Greeneville, Tenn., are seeking eight business and professional people for the Group Study Exchange Program of the Rotary Foundation. Four of those chosen will visit the northern regions of India in January, while four will travel to Istanbul, Turkey, in April. The program strives to improve international understanding by enabling people from different countries to learn from each other. The awards involve exchanging teams of business and professional persons for a four-week visit.
While abroad, team members observe their host's way of life and study the nation's economic, social and cultural characteristics through travel and discussions within participating Rotary districts.

Author to speak
BLACKSBURG - Students at Margaret Beeks Elementary School will have the opportunity to listen to a nationally known children's author Thursday, Sept. 19.
Jerry Pallota, author of such books as "Alphabet Books with a Text" and the "Ocean Alphabet," will conduct two assemblies at the school.
Pallota will also speak to the Beeks PTA that evening at 7 p.m. in the cafeteria. The event is open to the public. His books will be available for purchase and he will have time for autographs.
