48-hour newborn stay proposed

WASHINGTON - Doctors, mothers and, as of Tuesday, a growing list of U.S. senators believe insurers should be required to provide a minimum 48-hour hospital stay after a regular birth, or 96 hours after a Caesarean delivery.

Michelle and Steve Bauman, a New Jersey couple, told the Senate Labor Committee of their recent tragedy. On May 16, their baby girl was born. The following day, mother and daughter were discharged from the hospital. The day after that, the infant died from a common and treatable condition that almost certainly would have been detected in the hospital. The American Medical Association and the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists strongly endorse the proposed legislation.

Warner among new Senate chairmen

WASHINGTON - Senate Republicans named three new committee chairmen Tuesday to fill openings caused by former Finance Committee Chairman Bob Packwood's resignation on misconduct charges.

The full Senate must vote to make the appointments official, but no opposition has surfaced.

Sen. William Roth Jr., R-Del., moves up to the high-profile Finance chairmanship, leaving his position as head of the Governmental Affairs Committee.

Sen. John Warner, R-Va., who did not have a previous chairmanship, takes over as chairman of the Rules Committee.
