TREE FALLS ON POWER LINE, CUTS SERVICE

A tree fell on power lines and cut electricity to about 875 customers in the Old Southwest area of Roanoke Saturday night.

Appalachian Power Co. Division Manager J.T. Eaton said the power went out about 9:45 p.m., leaving Old Southwest homes and roads without light, including stoplights. By 10:30 p.m., power was restored to all but about 50 customers.

The tree that fell on Elm Avenue had to be cleared from electrical lines before power could be restored to the remaining customers, Eaton said. At 10:30 p.m. Saturday, Eaton said he could not say how long it would take to repair the line.

The 50 or so customers who remained without power live in the Elm Avenue and First Street area.
