NBA PLAYERS GIVE UP FIGHT OVER UNION

The vote by NBA players to preserve their union became official Tuesday when dissident players declined to challenge last week's election results.

The dissenting faction, which included Chicago's Michael Jordan and New York's Patrick Ewing, will work within the system to change their union.

``The players who filed the petition carefully considered and concluded the best thing for the players was ... to concentrate their efforts on bringing players together and reforming the players' association,'' said Jeffrey Kessler, an attorney for the dissident players. ``The players don't feel they can be effective if they're divided.''

After the decertification bid failed, player representatives voted 25-2 on Sept.13 to approve a new collective bargaining agreement, which was agreed to Aug.8.

The owners approved the six-year agreement 24-5 on Friday, and the league's 21/2-month lockout ended Monday. Training camps will open as scheduled Oct.6 and the season will begin Nov.3.

In other basketball:

Cheryl Miller joined Turner Sports as a reporter and studio analyst for TNT and TBS, four days after resigning as women's basketball coach at Southern California.

``Cheryl's knowledge of the game and the fact she's a former Olympian and college coach makes her a great assett to our NBA coverage,'' said Mike Pearl, the cable network's executive producer. ``Her versatility and broadcast experience will allow us to use her on events other than the NBA.''

The Hall of Fame player served as a color commentator with ABC and ESPN before returning to her alma mater as coach in 1993.

Former Virginia standout Junior Burrough was selected in the third round of the Continental Basketball Association draft. Burrough, a 6-8 forward, was the 40th pick overall, by Quad City.
