AMERICAN CUTS FARES 40 PERCENT

American Airlines is cutting fares by as much as 40 percent to all destinations in the United States and Canada and offering specials to some other foreign markets.

The specials, which require a 7-day advance purchase and a Saturday-night stay, include off-peak discounts averaging 40 percent off normal 21-day excursion fares, American said. Off-peak travel days are Tuesday, Wednesday and Saturday. Certain days during the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays are excluded. American Eagle domestic and Canadian flights are included.

Other fare specials are available to Europe, Mexico and Central and South America.

Delta Airlines and Continental Airlines said they will compete with American's prices, and United Airlines said it generally has the same policy.
