Because of unclear information in a Department of Health and Human Services news release, the birth rate for American women was understated in an Associated Press story and accompanying box in Friday's paper.

The overall birth rate for American women of childbearing age was 67.6 per 1,000. The rate given in the story and box, 15.5 per 1,000, was for the total population, including women, men and children.
