SCHAEFFER PREVAILS IN DIV. I RACE

Washington and Lee senior All-American Josephine Schaeffer won the Division I section of the Greensboro Invitational cross country meet Saturday, beating her closest competitor by seven seconds in Greensboro, N.C. She finished the race in 17:49, the 25th victory of her career. Without Schaeffer, the Generals, competing in the Division III portion of the race, placed fifth. The Generals' top finisher was freshman Natasha Dorefeeva.

In other cross country:

Stuart Bray of Northside won the B Division race of the William and Mary High School Invitational in Williamsburg. He completed the 5-kilometer race in 16:16 to best 249 other contestants. Teammate Tommy Maguire finished third.

In Blacksburg, the Virginia Tech women placed fourth and the men placed fifth in their respective divisions of the Virginia Tech Cross Country Invitational.

Jennifer Pohlig, who placed 12th, was Tech's top female finisher. In the men's division, John Hawthorne finished seventh to lead the Hokies.

SOCCER Eastern Mennonite edges W&L

Eastern Mennonite scored two goals in the first half and held on to defeat Washington and Lee 2-1 in an Old Dominion Athletic Confererence men's matchup in Lexington.

Scott Yoder and Jason Moore tallied the goals for Eastern Mennonite (7-4 overall, 4-0 ODAC). Sam Chase scored the lone goal for the Generals (5-2, 3-1) in the 90th minute.

nIn Radford, Ian Spooner tallied a hat trick in the first eight minutes of play as the Highlanders routed Pfeiffer 6-0 in a non-conference men's game. Eduardo Wissar, Brian Cazalot and Che Henderson scored Radford's three other first-half goals. Radford's 7-1-1 start is the best in school history.

nIn Ashland, Sheri Frost had two goals as Randolph-Macon Woman's, the second-ranked women's team in the nation, defeated Washington and Lee 4-1 for an ODAC victory.

Jenn Kohler added a goal and an assist for the Yellow Jackets (11-0, 3-0).

Freshman Nicole Johnson scored for Washington and Lee (5-2, 3-1).

Roanoke defeated Virginia Wesleyan 1-0 in an ODAC women's game. The game remained scoreless until midway through the second half when freshman Tori Erickson scored the lone goal for the Maroons. Roanoke goalie Kara Hedges made four saves to record the shutout.

Garey DePalma scored two goals and had an assist as Virginia Wesleyan defeated Roanoke 4-1 in a men's ODAC contest at Alumni Field.

Nate Hatcher put the Marlins ahead late in the first half. Roanoke's Shane Greene scored 2:57 into the second half to tie the score. The Marlins took the lead for good five minutes later on a goal by DePalma.

In Lynchburg, Joel Johnson scored two goals as Liberty defeated The Citadel 7-0 in a non-conference men's game.

ETC. Radford rallies for field hockey victory

Margaret Reid had two goals and an assist as Radford's field hockey team came from behind to defeat Virginia Commonwealth 4-3 at Dedmon Center Field in Radford.

The Rams were led by Toni Staub scored two goals for VCU (3-8, 0-3) and Heather Nelson had one.

Radford is (5-6, 1-2).

In Fredericksburg, Washington and Lee women's tennis team continued its domination of the South Atlantic Rolex Regional by grabbing five of the eight spots in the quarterfinals.

Top-seeded Natalia Garcia, Julie Ayers, Berry Blankinship, Anna O'Connor and Ericka Shapard all advanced for the Generals.

The Raleigh Vipers defeated the Roanoke Rugby Club 37-20 at Highland Park. Roanoke is 0-1.

Jeff Stone of Salem finished seventh in the Elite Men's Masters (40 and up) Division of the Discover Card Mile on Fifth Avenue in New York. Stone completed the race in 4 minutes, 38 seconds. John Underwood of Queensbury, N.Y., won the division in 4:22.

Roanoke defeated Catawba (N.C.) 1-0 in field hockey. Midfielder Ali Oglesby scored the lone goal with 5:20 left in the game. Jen Pohanka recorded three saves to get the shutout for the Maroons (6-1).
