W&L'S UPSET BID BLOCKED

Linebacker Tim Armoska returned a block field-goal attempt 72 yards for a touchdown in the fourth quarter as Randolph-Macon beat Washington and Lee 24-21 on Saturday in an Old Dominion Athletic Conference game in Ashland.

The Yellow Jackets (2-1-1 overall, 1-0 ODAC) held the Generals (0-2-1, 0-2) scoreless in the first half.

W&L's Brooks Fischer opened up the game in the second half with his arm, completing 33 of 51 passes for 362 yards, with three touchdowns and an interception. Fischer had scoring passes of 12 and 16 yards to Chris Chastain and a 20-yarder to James Urban.

The Generals, however, could not move the ball on the ground, gaining only 85 yards.

The Yellow Jackets ground out 182 yards rushing, and George Bland had 201 yards on 17-for-37 passing. Bland connected with Bryan Lewis on a 16-yard touchdown pass.

Chris Wilhelm scored on a 1-yard run for the Yellow Jackets, and Tony Labrador hit a 37-yard field goal.

In other games involving Virginia teams:

Richmond 21, Boston University 6: Jason Gabrels passed for two touchdowns and rushed for one as the Spiders remained unbeaten with a victory over the Terriers in Richmond.

Richmond, ranked No.16 in NCAA Division I-AA, is 4-0 overall for the first time in a decade and is 2-0 in the Yankee Conference. No.21 Boston U. (2-2, 1-2) saw its 14-game road winning streak end.

The Terriers' Kevin Foley, a transfer from Maryland, completed 31 of his 54 passes for 329 yards, but threw two interceptions and did not have a touchdown. Boston U. was held to 51 yards rushing and turned over the ball four times, each time squelching a drive. The Spiders did not commit a turnover.

Richmond relied on the run, gaining 247 yards on 60 carries. Gabrels threw only eight passes, completing four for 103 yards, including a 31-yard score to Rodney Bowens and a 50-yard touchdown to Antoine Lee. Gabrels also gained 39 yards on 15 carries and scored on a 11-yard run.

Minoso Rodgers gained 133 yards on 26 carries for the Spiders.

Hampton 34, Bethune-Cookman 14: Pirates running back Tyrone Mayer rushed for a career-high 202 yards and three fourth-quarter touchdowns to spark Hampton to a victory over the Wildcats in Jacksonville, Fla.

The Pirates, 3-2 in their first season of Division I-AA competition after moving up from Division II, put together touchdown drives of 98, 80 and 73 yards on a rainy night before a crowd of 8,823 at Jacksonville Municipal Stadium.

James Madison 21, Maine 17: Mike Cawley's touchdown pass to Macey Brooks with 37 seconds left helped the Dukes, ranked eighth in Division I-AA, avert an upset bid by the Black Bears in a Yankee Conference game in Orono, Maine.

Maine (1-3, 0-3) took a 17-14 lead with 2:05 remaining in the game when Bob Jameson scored on a 3-yard run to cap a seven-play, 74-yard drive. Jameson ran 21 times for 97 yards and two touchdowns.

JMU (4-1, 3-0) countered with a 10-play, 59-yard drive for the final score. Cawley completed six of nine passes during the drive, the longest a 13-yarder to Brooks.

Hampden-Sydney 35, Bridgewater 14: Brian DeFade ran for 123 yards and two touchdowns, and former North Cross and Patrick Henry High School standout Monty Smith scored on a 1-yard run as the Tigers roared past the Eagles in an Old Dominion Athletic Conference game in Hampden-Sydney.

The Tigers (2-2, 2-0) controlled the ball on the ground, rushing for 263 yards. They held Bridgewater (0-4, 0-2) to 45 yards rushing, and the Eagles' average starting field position was their 26-yard line.

Emory & Henry 34, Millsaps 17: Barry Wolfe threw a 70-yard touchdown pass to Aaron Brand just before halftime as the Wasps (4-0) took the lead for good en route to a victory over the Majors (2-2) in Jackson, Miss.

Brand's catch with 46 seconds left in the first half gave Emory & Henry (4-0) a 14-10 lead. The Wasps padded their lead when Andy Stanley, a former Patrick County High School star, scored on a 7-run touchdown midway through the third quarter.
