The Deacons held the Cavaliers to a season-low 107 yards on the ground, but 11th-ranked UVa prevailed 35-17 as quarterback Mike Groh passed for a career-high 335 yards.
``It's very frustrating for me because I know I can run against them,'' said Barber, who carried 19 times for 85 yards, his season low. ``When they do that, it opens up the pass and that's how Mike beat them deep a couple of times.''
On one of those occasions, Groh connected with Barber on a 47-yard pass in the closing seconds of the first half. Barber was struggling to make the end zone when he was stripped of the ball by Brent Morehead - one of two Barber fumbles in the second quarter.
The Cavaliers led 21-0 at the half, but that was almost a letdown after Patrick Jeffers dropped a long pass and Barber fumbled within sight of the end zone. Wake's confidence seemed to grow and the Deacons closed to 21-14 early in the fourth quarter.
``I think we came out flat [in the second half], like we had already won the game,'' said Barber, who had 168 all-purpose yards. ``It's disturbing because we said that was something we weren't going to let happen the rest of the year. And that's exactly what we did.''
OFFSIDES
Virginia was penalized 12 times, and the defense was flagged seven times for either jumping offsides or lining up in the neutral zone, which has been a recurring problem.
``It was mostly one guy, and I don't know why he can't stay on his side of the ball,'' said Welsh, referring to defensive tackle Tony Agee, whom was benched twice after penalties.
QUOTABLE
``I think it's a good slap in the face. It lets us know, `Hey, you're not as good as you think you are, so stop walking around with a cocky-type ambience.' To be confident, you have to prove it each week. You can't just show up.'' - Virginia defensive tackle Todd White.
NOTHING NEW
Linebacker Jamie Sharper was seen icing his right knee after the game, but that was viewed as a precaution less than three weeks after arthroscopic surgery. Sharper returned to the starting lineup, but that didn't prevent understudy Anthony Poindexter from making 15 tackles in a reserve role.
WHOOPS
Wake Forest's second touchdown, a 4-yard touchdown run by John Lewis, followed a bad snap from Walt Derey that caused UVa punter Will Brice to take a 36-yard loss to the Cavaliers' 9-yard line. Derey was unable to make a later snap after another player stepped on his hand.
NEXT WEEK
Virginia (5-1 overall, 4-0 ACC) visits North Carolina (2-2, 0-1) at noon at Kenan Stadium. The Tar Heels are coming off their second straight victory, a 62-0 triumph over Ohio University, but they are 2-9-1 against the Cavaliers since 1983.
