BLACKSBURG WORKS OVERTIME TO WIN

Bethany Johnston's shot at the buzzer sent the game into the second overtime and Blacksburg capitalized from the free-throw line to down Graham 71-67 in a non-district matchup Tuesday night in Bluefield.

Johnston, who was fouled on her shot, missed from the line, forcing a second extra period.

Johnston finished with 10 points for the Indians, and Karly Geller had a game-high 24. Andrea Feret added 13.

Beverly Proffitt paced the Cardinal with 19 points, 16 rebounds, six steals and three assists.

Narrows 58, Fort Chiswell 47: The Green Wave pulled away behind Bud Lucas after the host Pioneers went to a press late in the fourth quarter and proceeded to the victory in the Mountain Empire District opener for both teams .

Narrows (10-0) which dominated inside in the second half, was led by Suzanne Webb with 20 points and Lucas with 16. Amy Coleman's 20 and Amber Gunter's 14 led Fort Chiswell (1-9, 0-1)

Auburn 82, Giles 61: Crystal Moles scored 11 of her game-high 29 points in the third quarter as the Eagles pulled away from the Spartans to earn a Three Rivers District victory in Riner.

Auburn (7-5, 1-0) outscored Giles 26-11 in the third quarter and outrebounded the Spartans 49-22 for the game. Moles grabbed 20 rebounds -10 offensive - and Amy Davis grabbed 12 rebounds to go with 15 points.

Giles (6-5, 0-1) was led by Melissa Cumbee, with 14 points. Kristen White added 13 and Gina Claytor had 12.

Magna Vista 51, Gretna 37: Sandi Reid had seven of her 17 points in the second quarter, and Tanesia Kellam scored nine of her 13 in the first half as the Warriors cruised to a Piedmont District victory on Gretna's floor.

Magna Vista is 7-5 overall, 6-3 in the district.

Rocky Gap 68, Bland 44: The host Eagles won their first game of the season, building an early lead and cruising to a Mountain Empire District victory over the Rockets.

Amanda Clark led Rocky Gap (1-9, 1-0) with 18 points. Bland (0-11, 0-1) was paced by Pachess Umbarger, with 20 points.

George Wythe 66, PH-Glade Spring 57: Megan Johnson scored a game-high 28 points and grabbed eight rebounds to lead the Maroons past the Rebels in a Hogoheegee District game in Wytheville.

Johnson scored 10 of her points in the third quarter as Wythe (7-4, 5-3) outscored PH-Glade Spring 24-13 to break open the game.

Martinsville 74, Chatham 40: Tresita Holland scored 17 points and Erica Brandon scored 14 as the Bulldogs (9-3, 7-2) rolled to a Piedmont District victory over the Cavaliers in Chatham.

Chatham (3-9, 1-8) got 16 points from Tina Daye, including four 3-pointers.

Glenvar 69, Bath County 43: The Highlanders used pressure defense to score 29 points in the first quarter and never looked back in a Pioneer District victory over the Chargers on Glenvar's floor.

Erika Hale and Amy Layman scored eight points each in the opening period, mostly off steals, as the Highlanders (6-6, 4-0) built a 19-point lead. Hale finished with 20 points, Layman had 10 and Amanda Kennedy added 11. Hale also pulled down 12 rebounds.

Katie Hardbarger scored 18 points to lead Bath County (3-7, 2-2).

Parry McCluer 53, Covington 43: The Fighting Blues led by three with 35 seconds left, but Lindsey Coleman went 4-for-4 from the free-throw line and Chrystal Humphries sank a 3-pointer at the buzzer as Parry McCluer pulled away for a Pioneer District victory over the Cougars.

Humphries finished with 16 points for the Fighting Blues (7-4, 4-1) and Coleman had seven of her nine points in the fourth quarter and also added 10 rebounds and six blocks. Michelle Jeter scored 17 points for Covington (4-7, 2-3).

Floyd County 68, Christiansburg 45: In Floyd, the Blue Demons held tough for the first period, but the Buffaloes broke open the non-district game in the second and third quarters as Floyd County rolled to its seventh victory of the season.

Melissa Cantrell and Amy Vest led the Buffaloes with a game-high 13 points each. Cantrell had 11 of her 13 points in the first half to go with her six assists and Vest scored all of her points in the final period. Sara Conner added a dozen points and nine rebounds.

Galax 53, Grayson County 27: In Independence, Candi Owen led a balanced attack with 12 points as the Maroon Tide downed the Blue Devils for the third time this season in a Mountain Empire District game to remain undefeated.

Tammy Cox added 10 points and Erin Kyle had nine as Galax (11-0, 1-0) made 17 of 24 free throws and had nine of 10 players score.

Lindsey Carico and Sally Werth led Grayson County (0-11, 0-1) with seven points each.

James River 59, Highland 33: Nakia Burrell scored a game-high 14 points as the Knights defeated the Rams in a Pioneer District game in Buchanan.

Melissa Baker added 11 points for James River (2-9, 2-3).

Highland got 12 points from Amy Neil and 10 from Tammy Shifflett.

Lord Botetourt 63, Rockbridge County 47: Sara Moore scored nine of her game-high 24 points in the first quarter and Marisa Michalski added six of her eight in the period as the Cavaliers built an insurmountable lead and defeated the Wildcats in Daleville.

Michalski also grabbed eight rebounds for Botetourt (12-0, 1-0 Blue Ridge). Sarah Hicks added 20 points for the Cavaliers.

Kate Ides paced Rockbridge County with 12 points.

Radford 55, Shawsville 32: In Shawsville, Charlee Taylor scored 16 points in the second quarter and the Bobcats used full-court pressure to dominate the Shawnees in the district openers for both teams.

Using a full-court press in the second period, Radford forced 10 turnovers in the quarter, including four steals.

Taylor, who connected from 3-point range six times, was 4-for-4 from beyond the arc in the quarter. She finished with 24 points for the Bobcats (9-4, 1-0).

Megan Forester led the Shawnees (7-4, 0-1) with 14 points and grabbed nine rebounds.
