Byrd, the top-ranked team in Timesland, saw all of its upperclassmen - including leading scorer Cathy Smith - get into foul trouble in the opening period and sit out the second quarter. The Terriers' lead slipped from 13 to one at the half.
Brandy Allen led Byrd with six points in the first quarter, finishing with a team-high 12 points and three blocks. Kristi Dyer chipped in 10 points, as did Smith, to go with her six assists and eight rebounds. Smith faced foul trouble throughout the game and sat out the entire second quarter and played sparingly in the second half after picking up her third foul early in the third period.
Amber Kern led Northside with a game-high 14 points.
Glenvar 69, Bath County 43: The Highlanders used pressure defense to score 29 points in the first quarter and never looked back in a Pioneer District victory over the Chargers on Glenvar's floor.
Erika Hale and Amy Layman scored eight points each in the opening period, mostly off steals, as the Highlanders (6-6, 4-0) built a 19-point lead. Hale finished with 20 points, Layman had 10 and Amanda Kennedy added 11. Hale also pulled down 12 rebounds.
Katie Hardbarger scored 18 points to lead Bath County (3-7, 2-2).
Lord Botetourt 63, Rockbridge County 47: Sara Moore scored nine of her game-high 24 points in the first quarter and Marisa Michalski added six of her eight in the period as the Cavaliers built an insurmountable lead and defeated the Wildcats in Daleville.
Michalski also grabbed eight rebounds for Botetourt (12-0, 1-0 Blue Ridge). Sarah Hicks added 20 points for the Cavaliers.
Kate Ides paced Rockbridge County with 12 points.
James River 59, Highland 33: Nakia Burrell scored a game-high 14 points as the Knights defeated the Rams in a Pioneer District game in Buchanan.
Melissa Baker added 11 points for James River (2-9, 2-3).
Highland got 12 points from Amy Neil and 10 from Tammy Shifflett.
