International programs

BLACKSBURG - The University Office of International Programs at Virginia Tech has scheduled two programs this fall to help increase international awareness on campus.

The first, co-sponsored by the University Leadership Development, will be a leadership symposium titled "Strengthening International Programs at Virginia Tech." The program will be Tuesday, Oct. 10, 8:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. at Donaldson Brown Hotel and Conference Center. The program will feature several nationally known leaders in international programs who will speak on topics relevant to key issues on the development of a strong international program at the university.

The university's first Global Issues Forum will be Oct. 12-13. The program will feature professors from other universities who are leaders in global cultural studies and issues.

Ali Mazrui of the State University of New York at Binghamton will speak Thursday, Oct. 12, at 7:30 p.m. in Colonial Hall in Squires Student Center. Mazrui is the author of more than 20 books and will speak on "Africa in Crisis: The Passions, the Problems and the Prospects." Mazrui will address the issue "Africa's Triple Heritage Re-examined: Indigenous, Islam and Western Legacies" Friday, Oct. 13, at noon in Squires 150. The Virginia Tech African Studies Association, African Students Association, International Club and the Cranwell International Center are also sponsors of this program.

Women's group

BLACKSBURG - Women who are in relationships in which they feel powerless and dominated are invited to participate in a support group forming at the Psychological Services Center of Virginia Tech.

The group's first meeting is Wednesday, Oct. 11, from 7 to 8:30, if there is enough interest. If there isn't, the first meeting will be postponed until Oct. 18.

There will be a charge of $2 for each session, but the money will be used to pay for the group's costs.

Call the center at 231-6914 for more information.
