ROBBERY INTERRUPTS BANK'S PEACE, QUIET

After 60 years of banking peace and quiet, the FBI has come to Fork Union to investigate Fluvanna County's first bank robbery since 1935.

Two masked gunmen burst into Jefferson National Bank's Fork Union branch Tuesday, grabbed money from the cashiers' drawers and ran out, the FBI said. Two tellers were slightly injured.

The robbers jumped in a dark-colored International Scout and sped away, police said. Bank officials declined to say how much money was missing.

Fluvanna authorities said the bank probably had plenty of cash on hand for the first-of-the-month rush of those seeking to cash Social Security checks.

``Yeah, it was check day,'' said Fluvanna Chief Deputy Jack Gillispie. ``At this point, we don't know how much was taken. The bank is going through their records to see how much they had on hand.''

Fluvanna authorities said the getaway vehicle was stolen from a Buckingham County garage. The Scout was recovered Tuesday afternoon not far from the bank.

The timing of the robbery, coming on the day many people cash checks, probably means the robbers knew what they were doing, Gillispie said.

``They seemed to handle things pretty professionally,'' he said.
