SPOONER, HIGHLANDERS TOP KEYDETS

Ian Spooner scored two goals in a three-minute span in the first half Wednesday, leading the Radford University men's soccer team to a 3-0 victory over VMI in Lexington.

Spooner's first goal came off a corner kick from Edward Wisser 29 minutes into the game. Richard Shepherd closed the scoring with a goal with three minutes to play.

Greg Lea came up with six saves to preserve the shutout for the Highlanders (8-1-1). The Keydets' record dropped to 4-6.

In other sports in the region:

Kristen DiMillio and Jen Cowart each scored two goals to push the Virginia women's soccer team to a 6-1 victory over Virginia Tech in Blacksburg.

The Cavaliers, ranked seventh in the nation, scored twice in the first half and four times in the second, when Cowart got both of her goals. Virginia outshot Tech 37-7.

In the 78th minute, the Hokies (2-7-2) got their first-ever goal against UVa as senior defender Cindy Zier converted a penalty kick.

Washington and Lee's Michelle Bauman had three goals and an assist as the Generals rolled to a a 9-0 victory over Sweet Briar in an Old Dominion Athletic Conference women's soccer game.

Ericka Reineke and Karin Treese added two goals apiece for W&L (6-2 overall, 4-1 ODAC). Sweet Briar (2-6-1, 1-5) got 12 saves from Alexa Schriempf.

Susan Sautter and Courtney Cook scored two goals each as Ferrum shut out Averett 7-0 in a Dixie Conference women's soccer game in Ferrum.

Daniella Giusto got the shutout for the Panthers (5-4, 1-2). Tracy Fleming, Cindy Rhinehart and Hilary Wager each added a goal for Ferrum. Averett is 0-10, 0-4.

Jay Hardwick, the golf coach at Virginia Tech, fired a 5-under-par 65 to cruise to a seven-stroke victory and the $1,000 first-place prize in the Bobby Jones Pro-Am in Hot Springs.

Hardwick had six birdies and one bogey in his career round on the Cascades course. He had opened with a first round of 4-under 68 on the The Homestead Resort's Lower Cascades course. His 36-hole total of 9-under 133 easily outdistanced Chip Sullivan of Hanging Rock and Don Sweeting of Pinehurst, N.C., who each had second-round 72s for 140.

The foursome of Lower Cascades pro Bobby Fry, Kip Fry, Pete Worthy and George Phillips captured the team title.
