The Lions Club of Troutville received a Certificate of Appreciation recently at the Lions of Virginia Fall Conference. Lions International's Virginia Multiple District 24 recognized the Troutville chapter for its participation in the eyeglass recycling program. Members contributed 1,000 hours of work. President John Rice was singled out for leading the chapter's program and received the State Achievement Award for outstanding activities in 1994-95. He delivered 20,000 pairs of glasses to Chile and spent extra time fitting the glasses for their new owners. The members of the Naval Mobile Construction Battalion 23rd Detachment, assigned to the Naval and Marine Corps Reserve Center in Roanoke, spiffed up the reserve center, then moved into the community and lent a hand. The Seabees knocked out interior walls and ripped up old flooring at the West End Youth Center as part of the building's renovation. They replaced Victory Stadium's wooden bleachers with aluminum seats. The Seabees built playground equipment for South Roanoke Park and installed stairs to the public access area at Carvins Cove Reservoir. The reserve unit cleared off vacant lots for Roanoke Redevelopment and Housing Authority and later replaced 120 sinks in an authority's apartment building. The Seabees continued their service to the community at the Roanoke Valley Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals by repairing light fixtures, putting in electrical outlets, repairing some fencing and adding chain-link fencing. They also built book shelves, repaired flooring and erected a utility building.

The Salem Fire Fighters #3478 recently held their 1995 Fill-the-Boot Drive at the Salem Wal-Mart and raised $1,100 for the Muscular Dystrophy Association.

The Roanoke MDA Telethon Activity Center collected $2,278 for the Muscular Dystrophy Association. The center was set up on Labor Day at Tanglewood Mall. A variety of entertainers and games added to the spirit of giving. All funds raised will stay in the area.
