BEATING DEATH BRINGS CAPITAL MURDER CHARGE

PORTSMOUTH - A Portsmouth man has been charged with capital murder in the beating death of a 60-year-old man.

Police said Rodney L. Sink, 22, fatally beat Cecil E. Meeks at the victim's home late Monday or early Tuesday. Police found Meeks, a retired pipefitter who had worked for more than 30 years at Norfolk Naval Shipyard in Portsmouth, in his room early Tuesday.

Friends and neighbors said Sink had tried unsuccessfully to rent a room at the boarding house Monday. He is being held without bond in the Portsmouth Jail.

EMPORIA - Authorities are looking for a man who kicked a police officer and escaped from the Emporia Police Department by squeezing through an 18-inch-wide window.

Police said it was the only escape from the station in recent memory.

Butler is charged with possessing stolen property from a house, three counts of possessing stolen property from cars, two counts of larceny from cars and two counts of vandalizing cars, police said.

After the escape, police also charged him with escape, destruction of public property and assault and battery of a police officer.
