COUNT PULASKI HAVING HIS DAY SATURDAY

The 18th annual Count Pulaski Day festival will get underway at 10 a.m. Saturday with entertainment, arts and crafts, and a Revolutionary War re-enactment.

Count Casimir Pulaski was a Polish nobleman who lost his life fighting on behalf of the colonists during the American Revolution, and whose name was adopted by Pulaski County and the town of Pulaski.

Janie Hardwick will give a tribute to Count Pulaski during the opening ceremonies and Winsdon Pound will appear in costume to give a speech as Count Pulaski.

The musical entertainment begins at 11 a.m. with Blacksburg's Sauerkraut Band.

The band will play for another hour at 12:30 p.m. In between, Polish dancers from Virginia Tech will perform.

Cloggers will take center stage at 1:30 p.m., followed by a 45-minute sets by the country band Sierra starting at 2 p.m.

Throughout the day, arts and crafts vendors will be selling their wares. Horse-drawn wagon rides will be available, and Revolutionary War re-enactors will perform.

A food court will feature Polish foods.

Tours will be offered at the county's historic Old Courthouse and the town's Train Station, which is also the home of the Raymond Ratcliffe Memorial Museum. The Kiwanis Club will hold its "white elephant" sale. Police and lifesaving squad vehicles will be on display, accompanied by McGruff, the anti-crime dog, Smokey the Bear, and crash test dummies Vince & Larry.

Activities for children will include story-telling, face-painting, a clown performance, chalk art, rock painting, ceramic necklaces and more. The Pulaski County High School Art League will be doing some of the face-painting and crafts demonstrations.

An auction will get underway at 2 p.m. at the All Country Restaurant and Club at 220 N. Washington Ave.
