TERRIERS REMAIN PERFECT

BRANDI ALLEN paces William Byrd with 24 points, 14 in the second half.

William Byrd scored 60 points in the middle two quarters and blasted Blue Ridge District foe Rockbridge County 92-47 to remain undefeated in high school girls' basketball action Thursday night in Lexington.

Leading 48-24 at the half after a 32-point second quarter, the Terriers added to their monstrous advantage in the third, using a trapping, full-court defense to go on a 28-5 run.

Brandi Allen led the Terriers, the top-ranked team in Timesland, in the first half, scoring 10 of her game-high 24 points in the half. She, along with Cathy Smith's 11 first-half points, built the score up at the half, doubling the Wildcats' halftime total.

Smith would end the night with 17 points, before leaving the game late in the third quarter with an arm injury. Kim Kendrick added 10 points for William Byrd (13-0, 2-0).

Kate Ides led the Wildcats (2-8, 0-2) with 11 points and five rebounds. Tonia Clemens added 10 points.

Lord Botetourt 78, Alleghany 31: Lord Botetourt opened up with a 17-2 run and held poor-shooting Alleghany to single digits in the first half as the undefeated Cavaliers blasted the Mountaineers in a Blue Ridge District contest in Low Moor.

Lord Botetourt, the second-ranked team in Timesland, held a 43-8 advantage over Alleghany heading into the locker room at the half. The Mountaineers were 12-of-84 from the floor with most of the attempts coming from inside the paint and 3-of-8 from the free-throw line.

Sara Moore led the Cavaliers (12-0, 2-0) in scoring with a game-high 20 points, one point better than teammate Sarah Hicks, who had 19. Aimee Bird chipped 13 and Marsha Michalski added 10 for Lord Botetourt.

Nikki Brown led Alleghany with 11 points and grabbed 14 rebounds in the losing effort.

Bath County 61, James River 45: In Hot Springs, Bath County rebounded from an early first-quarter deficit to defeat James River in a Pioneer District game.

Melanie Woods led the Chargers (4-7, 3-2) with 18 points and six rebounds. Sophomore center Katie Hardbarger added 11 points and nine rebounds.

James River (2-9, 2-3) was led by Amy Sprinkle and Nakia Burrell, who each scored 12 points.
