FOR THE RECORD
We wanted to express our egret about a fowl deed on the front page of
Thursday's New River Current. An alert reader from Christiansburg, who knows
his birds as well as his law books, called to point out that we misidentified
the graceful, white beauty pictured in flight over the Little River. And
indeed, a check with the "National Audubon Society Field Guide to North
American Birds" shows that we winged it and lost: Our subject was a great
egret, distinguished from the blue heron by its plumage, black legs and yellow
bill.
