WARNER: HIGHWAY MONEY DUE

Sen. John Warner says Virginia soon will get $150 million for transportation projects, despite congressional delays in passing a required highway bill.

Warner, R-Va., said Thursday he planned to deliver a check to Gov. George Allen for Virginia's share of the proposed $6.5 billion National Highway System for fiscal 1996.

Described as a successor to the Interstate Highway System, the National Highway System marks 165,000 miles of interstates and other highways for special federal funding. The highways, including 3,500 miles in Virginia, represent 4 percent of the nation's roads, but carry 40 percent of the passenger vehicles and 70 percent of commercial trucks.

Congress missed its own Sept. 30 deadline for adopting the highway bill because of haggling between House and Senate committees. Legislators extended their deadline, but money can't be appropriated to states until the bill is passed.

``The House hasn't quite gotten to where we in the Senate feel they should be,'' Warner said. He predicted a resolution soon.
