The Express outshot, outskated and outhustled Hampton Roads, though the Admirals claimed mitigating circumstances. Hampton Roads held out six first- and second-line players in order to take a long look at the rookies, many of whom will be cut today.
Roanoke coach Frank Anzalone, who also rested four of his best players, cautioned against reading much into the victory.
``I feel pretty good about our team right now,'' he said. ``I see a lot of promise. Our defense is young and played well.
``But you can't tell much from exhibition games. Exhibition scores almost never have any relation to what happens in the regular season.''
The Express had 17 power-play opportunities and converted on five, both of which would have been club records had the game been a regular-season contest.
The Express jumped out to a 3-0 lead on power play goals by Tim Christian and Brian Gallentine, sandwiched around Herr's shorthanded tally. Roanoke increased its lead to 5-1 after two periods, as Jon Larson and Dave Holum each added power-play goals.
After Hampton Roads got goals from Rod Taylor and Jeff Kostuch to cut the lead to 5-3 early in the third period, Herr and Jeff Jestadt scored in succession to put the game out of reach.
The Express continues its exhibition schedule tonight in Charlotte before playing its only home exhibition game on Tuesday against Hampton Roads.
