MARTINSVILLE RACE HOLDS BIG PURSE

More than 150 Late Model Stock drivers are expected to enter cars in the Taco Bell 300, held Oct.15 at Martinsville Speedway.

The race features the biggest purse for a Late Model race, with $25,000 going to the winner and every car in the field taking home at least $1,000.

Also, the top seven cars will be inverted at the halfway point - 100 laps - and the halfway leader will receive a $5,000 bonus.

Late Model drivers entered in the field include Johnny Rumley, Shayne Lockhart, Dennis Setzer, Barry Beggarly, Tony McGuire, Mike Dillon, Jay Fogleman, Ronnie Thomas, Eddie Johnson and Karen Schulz.

From the Winston Racing Mid-Atlantic Series, entries include points champion Phil Warren, runner-up Elliott Sadler and top-10 competitors Bugs Hairfield, Andy Houston, Nathan Buttke and Jeff Agnew.

A couple of drivers with famous dads - Dale Earnhardt Jr. and Jason Jarrett (son of Dale Jarrett) also will test their skills in the Martinsville race.

Qualifying begins at 3 p.m. Saturday with the fastest 20 cars making the field. Positions 21 through 32 will be set in four 25-lap qualifying races beginning at 12:30 p.m. Sunday. Four provisional spots will fill out the rest of the 36-car field.

The 200-lap feature race begins shortly thereafter.

Thomas owns the Late Model qualifying record with a lap of 89.876 mph, set in 1989. Lockhart won last spring's Late Model race at Martinsville and pocketed the $25,000 first prize.

Tickets are $15 for adults and $5 for children. For information, call the speedway office at 540-956-3151.
