VINING SAVES FERRUM'S DAY

Millard Vining hit tight end Mike Souma on a six-yard touchdown pass with 1:02 left in the game to give the Panthers a 30-24 victory over Guilford.

Vining was not expected to play due to a leg injury he suffered in last week's game against Newport News. The senior came in after his replacement, Josh Whitley, was knocked out of the game.

"I wasn't going to play unless it was an emergency," Vining said, "I guess it became an emergency when Josh went down."

Vining was 2-for-2 on passes for 21 yards.

"All of the coaches told me not to throw the ball unless the receiver was open because we could still win it with a field goal," said Vining.

Vining's clutch performance came as no surprise to head coach Dave Davis.

"I didn't want to get him hurt, but I wanted him out there. What a gamer he is. A real competitor."

Ferrum got the ball with 3:36 remaining after getting a safety off a blocked punt by linebacker Kevin Slough. One key play on the drive was a 26-yard run by fullback David Anthony that put the ball on the Guilford 7-yard line. Two running plays netted them only one yard before Vining found Souma in the back of the end zone.

Guilford then returned the kickoff to their own 42-yard line but on its first play, linebacker Ian Edwards picked off a Dan Strelkauskas pass to seal the victory. It was Strelkauskas' first interception in 69 attempts this season.

Down 24-21 late in the game, Slough blocked the punt by the Quakers' David Heggie and recovered it in the corner of the end zone.

"They [officials] said I was out of bounds, but I thought I was in and had a touchdown. I can't wait to see it on the tapes."

"We had a return on," coach Davis said, "and I was scared we might rough the kicker but Slough is always free to block the punt if the opportunity is there."

Anthony paced the Panthers with 107 yards rushing on 18 carries and scored a touchdown.

Guilford was led by tailback Heggie, the 1994 ODAC Player of the Year, who had 151 yards on 30 carries.

Ferrum racked up 360 yards of total offense to Guilford's 319. The win raised Ferrum's record to 4-2, while Guilford goes to 2-2. The Panthers will play at Chowan College on Saturday.
