AIDING CHARITIES

Area organizations and businesses have been busy recently collecting money and items for charity:

ERA Townside raised $5,300 for the Muscular Dystrophy Association in its recent ninth annual pancake breakfast. This year is the second consecutive year the local real estate firm has raised more than $5,000 to fight MDA.

Chemical Residential Mortgage Corp., Crestar Mortgage Corp., First National Bank and The National Bank each donated $250 for a $1,000 door prize, won by Phil and Christine Grogan of America's Carpet Gallery. The couple donated a portion of the prize back to MDA.

Nationwide, ERA Real Estate raised more than $2 million for MDA this year, and has collected more than $18 million since 1977.

First National Bank recently gave $1,000 to Montgomery County Parks and Recreation, to be used for new playground equipment. The bank was one of the first area businesses to donate to the fund-raising effort.

The Montgomery County Kiwanis Club gave $600 to the county Sheriff's Office to support its DARE program. The Drug Abuse Resistance Education program educates young people about the dangers of illegal alcohol and drug use.

State Electric Supply Co. raised $255 in a raffle of a hand-crafted Virginia Tech tiffany lamp to benefit the Women's Resource Center. Tickets were $1, and the winners were James W. Cox and his wife, of Christiansburg.

New River Valley Scuba Divers gave $200 to Big Brothers/Big Sisters of the New River Valley. The divers, who participated in a recent New River cleanup, pick a charity to benefit each year.

Customers and employees of Charter Federal Savings Bank in Blacksburg and Radford, and the law offices of Long & Long, collected more than 100 items for the Children's Home Society of Virginia.

The bank collected diapers, formula, bottles, clothing, story books, blankets and other baby supplies. The items will be used for newborns up to 6 months who are placed in the care of the Children's Home Society.

August Kids, a program sponsored by Radford Clothing Bank, collected clothing for 137 children in a recent campaign.

Each child was given two sets of clothes, along with a backpack and a packet of school supplies.

The Radford Clothing Bank is sponsored by a number of Radford and Fairlawn churches. Funding for the clothing drive was provided by the United Way, and services and supplies came from Radford's Kmart, Christiansburg's Wal-Mart, Goody's, Robertson Marketing Group, Plymouth Co., Radford Lions Club, Beck Richardson and Beth Stauffer.
