HORSE AND MULCH ISSUES UP FOR VOTE IN MONTGOMERY

Two hot-button zoning issues will be up for votes Monday before the Montgomery County Board of Supervisors.

The controversial measures, to be taken up during a meeting that begins at 7 p.m. at the Montgomery County Courthouse, include:

A proposal to permit the keeping of horses in large-lot subdivisions. The supervisors are scheduled to vote on a proposal to allow two horses per five acres, up to a maximum of four horses on 10 acres. Last month, horse lovers packed a public hearing to voice support for the measure, which got its start early last summer in a neighborhood zoning dispute. The county Planning Commission recommended approval of the measure by an 8-1 vote.

An application by Hollybrook Sawdust and Mulch Inc. to rezone 12 acres on Firetower Road in western Montgomery. Neighbors presented a 132-name petition last month opposing the move, but Hollybrook officials say the rezoning is necessary to expand retail operations. The Planning Commission recommended against the rezoning 8-1 last month.
