POLICE ARREST 5 TEEN-AGERS IN ROANOKE MAN'S BEATING

Roanoke police arrested five teen-age males in connection with the beating of a 25-year-old man in Southwest Roanoke late Sunday.

The teens, who range in age from 16 to 19, were charged with malicious wounding, use of an illegal sawed-off shotgun, and breaking and entering.

Police gave this account of what happened: The teens forced their way into the house of Hoang Den Phan of the 1100 block of Chapman Avenue. Officers responded to Phan's house and found him on the bedroom floor, bleeding from his arms, legs, chest and sides.

Phan was treated at Roanoke Memorial Hospital and released.

Police said Phan told them he was involved in a fight with another man about a week ago. On Sunday, Phan said, he answered the door and five teens forced their way into his house, beating him with aluminum baseball bats. One teen-ager carried a sawed-off shotgun.

Shortly afterward, a Roanoke County police officer stopped a car carrying five teen-agers on Electric Road. Police found a sawed-off shotgun and four aluminum baseball bats in the vehicle.

Two 16-year-olds were charged with breaking and entering and malicious wounding. A 17-year-old was charged with possession of a sawed-off shotgun and breaking and entering.

Police charged The Van Vu, 19, of Chapman Avenue Southwest, and Thri Quol Tran, 19, no address given, with malicious wounding and breaking and entering.

In other incidents over the weekend:

A 25-year-old Southwest Roanoke man was beaten late Sunday by a motorist who first asked him for the time.

Roanoke police said the victim was standing in the 800 block of Marshall Avenue about 10 p.m. when a man in a cream-colored older model car drove up and asked for the time. As the victim looked at his watch, the driver got out of his car and pushed the victim into the car window and beat him, knocking him to the sidewalk. The victim was treated for facial injuries at Community Hospital of Roanoke Valley.

Two men tried to rob a pizza delivery driver with a toy gun about 8:30 p.m. Sunday in Northwest Roanoke.

The Pizza Hut driver was delivering to Chattam Hills Apartments in the 3300 block of Hershberger Road. Two men approached the driver on the steps, demanded money and forced him back to his car. At the car, one of the men brandished a silver plastic gun. The delivery driver pushed the men away, got into his car and drove away. No one was injured.

A 24-year-old Northeast Roanoke man was injured when the passenger in a car grabbed and dragged him 10 feet early Sunday in Southeast Roanoke.

Police said a red Mustang stopped and the pedestrian was asked directions. As the victim approached the car, the passenger grabbed him and the driver accelerated. The victim was treated at Roanoke Memorial Hospital and released.

Police continue to search for a man who was stabbed in the chest by his girlfriend early Saturday.

About 2:10 a.m., police responded to the 1800 block of Melrose Avenue Northwest. Police said a 38-year-old woman told them she had been beaten by her 39-year-old boyfriend. The two fought and she stabbed him in the chest.

Police found a blood trail from the house to the front yard. The knife that was used in the attack was found in a kitchen microwave oven. Officers said there was a large amount of blood at the scene.

No one has been charged.

Police charged a 24-year-old Northwest Roanoke man in connection with the attempted abduction of a 6-year-old boy late Friday.

A Roanoke officer arrested Christopher Scott Johnson of the 500 block of 16th Street about 9 p.m.

Police said the 6-year-old boy told them he was playing outside his grandmother's house in the 1900 block of Liberty Road in the Lincoln Terrace housing development. A man fitting Johnson's description chased him and tried to grab him. The boy eluded his assailant and ran to safety inside his grandmother's house. No one was injured.

Police will petition three Roanoke teens for the property damage of 78 vehicles in the city between Sept. 21 and 27.

Police said the three boys - ages 15, 16 and 17 - told them that about 500 rounds from a BB pistol were used to shoot out the windows of the vehicles. Police said the vehicles were parked in various locations in Roanoke.
