ROANOKE COUNTY PLANS SCHOOL-YEAR CHANGE FORUM

A forum on a proposal for an extended school calendar in Roanoke County will be held at 7:30 p.m. Monday at William Byrd Middle School, 2910 Washington Ave., Vinton. David Blevins, chairman of the calendar modification committee that studied the issue, will speak.

The committee has recommended that schools be allowed to switch to an extended calendar with several shorter breaks during the year instead of a long summer vacation.

Under one alternative, students would attend school for nine weeks, then be off for three weeks. Under a second alternative, they would be in school for 12 weeks, then have a four-week break.
