BROWN, Nora Ethelene, 87, of Ferrum, our precious mother and grandmother, departed this earth to be with the Lord on Saturday, October 7, 1995. She was a faithful member of Rockfield Primitive Baptist Church where she served as treasurer for many years. She is preceded in death by her husband, James Lee Brown; a son, Paul Brown. The following family members may rejoice in her memory: three daughters, Gloria Jean Brown, Betty Bernard, and Kathleen Brown; two sons, James Brown and Dexter Brown; one grandson, Jeffrey Brown, all of Ferrum; one sister, Pearl Meadows of Salem; one sister-in-law, Lissie Young of Roanoke; and a host of nieces, nephews and friends. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m., Wednesday, October 11, 1995, at Stanfield Mortuary Chapel, with burial to follow in the Brown & Young Cemetery in Ferrum. BRYANT, Susie Ann, 69, of Christiansburg, died Friday, October 6, 1995 in the Montgomery Regional Hospital. Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Tuesday at the Christiansburg Mennonite Fellowship, conducted by Pastor Mark Akers, with burial in Roselawn Memorial Gardens. The body is at the church. BYRD, Gordon I., 88, of Rt. 2 Penhook, died Monday, October 9, 1995 in a local hospital. He was born September 15, 1907 to the late Samuel and Mary Byrd, and was preceded in death by a brother, Leonard Byrd. Mr. Byrd was a retired farmer, and was a member of Snow Creek Christian Church, where he served as deacon for several years. He was also an honorary member of the Snow Creek Volunteer Fire Department. Surviving are his wife of 66 years, Haseltine Byrd; daughter and son-in-law, Shelby and Jerry Maas, Moneta; four grandchildren, Gayle and Jim Clingenpeel, Bill and Patty Maas, Lorri Maas, and Jackie Maas; four great-grandchildren, Ellen, Billy, Emily, and Tyler Maas; two si sters, Mrs. Bernard (Nora) Broadie, and Mrs. Clyde Potter; several nieces and nephews also survive. Funeral services will be conducted from Snow Creek Christian Church, 2 p.m. Wednesday, with Rev. Berlin Hanks and Rev. Glenn Voss officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. The family suggests that memorials be made to the Snow Creek Fire Department or Rescue Squad, Rt. 2 Penhook, Va. 24137. CARROLL, Ruth E., 74, of Leesburg, Fla., died Friday, October 6 1995. She was formerly of Roanoke. She was a member of the Sunshine Promenaders Square Dance Club, an accomplished artist, Den Mother of Boy Scouts of America for ten years, a former member of Lake Co. Twirlers, and a former member of the Leesburg Art Association. Surviving are her husband, J.R. (``Dick'') Carroll; two sons, James R. Carroll Jr., Marietta, Ga., Steven A. Carroll, Swansboro, N.C.; three daughters, Sue Tolbert, Roanoke, Cheryl Knick, Manassas, and Julia Lee, Columbus, Miss.; two sisters, Louise Allen and Sue Googe, both of Atlanta, Ga.; eight grandchildren. There will be a graveside service at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens Wednesday, October 11, 1995 at 2:30 p.m., with the Rev. William G. Foster Jr. officiating. The family will receive friends at Oakey's North Chapel Wednesday from 1 to 2 p.m.

CREWS, Thomas Eugene, 69, of Martinsville, died Sunday, October 8, 1995. Funeral 2 p.m. Wednesday at Loving Funeral Home Chapel, Covington.

CROUCH, Kenneth Elwood, 70, of Route 3, Bedford, passed away Sunday, October 8, 1995 in the Bedford County Memorial Hospital. He was born November 23, 1924 in Bedford County, a son of the late Howard E. Crouch and Essie Overstreet Crouch. He was a retired employee of the Roanoke Times & World-News, having worked in the circulation department, and was a member of the Quaker Baptist Church. He was well known as the Bedford Historian with history and research being his primary interest. He served for many years with the Bedford City-County Museum and was a volunteer researcher for the Bedford Genealogical Society, was a journalist for the Bedford Bulletin, a former Bedford City Police Dispatcher, former clerk of the Quaker Baptist Church, was clerk of the Strawberry Baptist Association for the past 18 years, and headed the 200th anniversary committee that compiled a history of the Strawberry Baptist Association. He is survived by numerous cousins. Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday, October 11, 1995 at 2 p.m. from the Quaker Baptist Church, by the Rev. Lewis Garst, the Rev. Elmer Sellers, and the Rev. Seaburn Daniel. Interment will follow in the Overstreet Family Cemetery. The family will receive friends today from 7 to 9 p.m. at Updike Funeral Home, Bedford. They request that all visitors call at the funeral home or the church. They also request that those wishing to make memorials consider the Quaker Baptist Church or the Bedford City-County Museum.

DICKERSON, Harvey, 64, of Pembroke, departed this life Saturday, October 7, 1995 at the Richfield Nursing Center, Salem, Va. He was born February 9, 1929 in Pembroke, the son of the late Henley Dickerson and Lizzie Chapman Dickerson. He was a member of the First Baptist Church, Pembroke. He leaves to cherish his memory two sisters, Mrs. Edith Hicks of Spokane, Wash., Mrs. Hazel Houston of Bluefield, W. Va.; three brothers, Samuel Dickerson of Roanoke, Donald Dickerson of Pearisburg, Bobby Dickerson of Christiansburg; and a host of other relatives and friends. Funeral service will be Wednesday, October 11, 1995, at 2 p.m. at the First Baptist Church, Pembroke, with The Rev. James Cooper officiating. Burial will be at the Horse Shoe Cemetery, Pembroke. FERGUSON, Hazel Greer, 70, of Ferrum, died Monday morning, October 9, 1995 at her home. She is preceded in death by her husband Grady Ferguson, and a son Wayne Compton. Surviving are three daughters and sons-in-law, Brenda and Billy Campbell, Marlene and Richard Young, Jean and John Millirons, all of Rocky Mount; one daughter-in-law, Felicia Compton, Ventura, Calif.; seven grandchildren and spouses, Steve and Laura Hodges, Tim and Sherri Taylor, Lisa Preston, Ricky Young, Eric and Germaine Mommerency, Trevin Millirons, Justin Millirons; stepgranddau ghter, Barbara Huffman; three great-grandchildren, Stephanie Preston, Brandon Dillon, Ryan Hodges; six sisters, Etta Cooper, Mae Nagy, Polly Hodges, Lonnie Holland, all of Rocky Mount, Virginia Hodges, Bassett, Carolyn Greer of North Carolina; three brothers, Edward Greer, Florida, Walter Greer, California, Jim Greer, Rocky Mount; and several nieces and nephews. GREEN, Melvin Chilton, (``Major U.S. Army Retired"), 80, of Salem, died Sunday, October 8, 1995. He is survived by his wife, Isabel Green; his daughters and sons-in-law, Peggy and John Grant, Jamie and Hank Highfield, Ellen Bowles; son and daughter-in-law, David and Sandra Green; brother, Samuel Wiley Green, South Dennie, Mass.; a sister, Grace Ellen Lyon, Seal Beach, Calif.; 12 grandchildren. A memorial service will be held at Fort Lewis Baptist Church on Tuesday, October 10 at 7 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Fort Lewis Baptist Church. KLOUS, Louise Morgan, of Roanoke, died Sunday, October 8, 1995. She was the widow of Col. D. Donald Klous and was a member of the St. John's Episcopal Church. She was a graduate of Randolph-Macon Women's College in Lynchburg and did graduate studies at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville. Mrs. Klous was a member of several social clubs. Surviving are cousins, Mrs. Mary Alice Quekemeyer, Roanoke, Mrs. Jane Avinger, Orangeburg, S.C., Mrs. Rebecca McMaster, Winnsboro, S.C., Mrs. Harriett Whitener, Gastonia, N.C., Miss M. LINDAMOOD, Elizabeth H., 80, of Roanoke, went to be with the Lord, Monday, October 9, 1995. She was the Secretary/Treasurer of Hatcher Trucking Company, Inc., a member of Woodlawn United Methodist Church and a member and past treasurer of Etta Chapter #185, Order of the Eastern Star. Surviving are her husband, M. C. POWERS, Virginia Elizabeth Morris, 73, of Roanoke, passed away Sunday, October 8, 1995, at her residence. She was a former employee of Roanoke County Schools and the widow of Walter Ernest Powers. Surviving are one son, Ernest Clay Powers, Vinton; one daughter and son-in-law, Sandra and Bobby Boone, Boones Mill; three brothers and sisters-in-law, James and Bertha Morris, Vinton, Petey and Dot Morris, Roanoke, Billy and Nancy Morris, Vinton; three sisters and brother-in-law, Hilda M. Stevens, Vinton, Ruby M.
