CAVE SPRING WINS GOLF TITLE

Douglas Kenney two-putted the first playoff hole for a bogey to help boost Cave Spring past Franklin County in a playoff for the Roanoke Valley District golf title Monday at The Waterfront Country Club.

Bryan Staggs fired a 73 to lead the Knights. Ernie Cochran added a 78 and Chris Pugh a 79. Staggs and Cochran parred the par 4, 378-yard first hole on the par-71 course.

The Eagles' Chad Young double-bogeyed the hole and partner Shannon Altice bogeyed it. Jonathan Agee led Franklin County with a 77.

Patrick Henry's Mark Baldwin and Ryan Patterson and Pulaski County's Michael Chandler qualified for the Northwest Region tournament Oct.18 based on their play during the regular season. The regional will be played at Evergreen Country Club in Manassas. (Results in Scoreboard. B2)

In other golf:

Anthony Romano carded a 79 to lead Northside to the Blue Ridge District tournament title at Hunting Hills Country Club.

Jason Orlando and Josh Mattox each shot an 80 and teammate Jacob Jarrett had an 81 as the Vikings finished at 320.

Eric Reynolds carded a 78 to win medalist honors and stake Rockbridge County to a second-place finish. The Wildcats finished at 330, followed by William Byrd at 332. Salem and Lord Botetourt tied for fourth at 338, and Alleghany finished at 409. (Results in Scoreboard. B2)

Drew Robinson of Christiansburg shot an 8-over-par 79 to earn medalist honors and lead the Blue Demons to a second-place finish in the New River District tournament at Blue Ridge Country Club.

Wes Martin carded an 82 to help Blacksburg win the title. The Indians finished at 363, Christiansburg was two strokes back and Carroll County (388) was a distant third. (Results in Scoreboard. B2)

Matthew Fuckrell was the individual medalist and Galax won the team title at the Mountain Empire District tournament in Bastain.

Fuckrell shot a 9-over-par 80 to take a four-stroke victory over John Thompson of Bland.

Galax had a 339 aggregate to defeat Bland by 31 strokes. Narrows was third with 390 at the par-71 Wolf Creek Golf and Country Club. (Results in Scoreboard. B2)

Aaron Kovac fired a 73 to help Martinsville win its third consecutive Piedmont District title, with a score of 315, one stroke better than Fieldale-Collinsville.

Robbie Burton shot a 78, Chris Boswell an 81 and Brian Smith an 83 to complete the scoring. Boswell is the lone senior on the team, whose coach, Gene Fain, was named coach of the year.

Martinsville topped Fieldale-Collinsville on its home course and beat the district's player of the year, Daryl Purdue, who led the Cavaliers with a 72 on the par-71 course. (Results in Scoreboard. B2)

Reid Johnson shot a 76 as Jefferson Forest edged Appomattox County to win the Seminole District tournament at Falling River Country Club in Appomattox.

The Cavaliers finished at 314, one stroke ahead of the Raiders who won a regular-season title playoff between the teams before Monday's tournament. Liberty was at 342. (Results in Scoreboard. B2)

Lee Fisher of Liberty, who qualified individually for Monday's Region 3 tournament at Beaver Hills Golf Course in Collinsville, was named Player of the Year and Jim Thacker of Jefferson Forest was chosen Coach of the Year.

Virginia Tech is ninth after two rounds of the Ping/Tour Tulsa Invitational in Tulsa, Okla.

The Hokies shot a team score of 618 and trail leader Louisiana State by 32 strokes entering today's final round.

The inaugural CVB Open Fall Classic will be played Tuesday at Hanging Rock Golf Club in Salem.

The captain's choice tournament, with the proceeds to benefit the promotion of tourism in the Roanoke Valley, will begin at 10 a.m. with a shotgun start.The entry fee is $400 per team or $100 per person, with hole sponsorships also available. Entry deadline is today. For information, call the Roanoke Valley Convention and Visitors Bureau at 342-6025.

Ferrum men edge Guilford 2-1

Scott Maxwell's goal in the 74th minute game Ferrum a 2-1 victory over Guilford in a men's soccer game in Greensboro, N.C. Kevin Chenosky's goal gave the Panthers (4-6) the lead in the third minute, but the Quakers (3-10) tied it on a goal Steve Morrison in the 65th minute. Stevie Reynolds, a former Franklin County High School standout, made eight saves to earn the victory for Ferrum.

Beth Gregory scored one goal and assisted on one as Delaware dominated Radford University 4-0 in a women's soccer game in Newark, Del. The Blue Hens are 4-5; Radford is 3-7-1.

The Roanoke Star under-13 Red team finished second during the weekend at the Richmond Columbus Day tournament, falling to the Baltimore FC Bullets 2-0 in the final.

The Virginia Tech and Radford men's teams square off at 7 p.m. today at the Dedmon Center fields in Radford in their annual battle for the ``New River Rock.''
