MARINE ON FURLOUGH IN PULASKI COUNTY KILLED IN HEAD-ON VEHICLE COLLISION

An 18-year-old Pulaski County man, who had just finished Marine boot camp, died Wednesday in a head-on collision that injured two other people.

Jason B. Arehart of Hiwassie apparently drove his 1988 Oldsmobile sedan into the path of a pickup truck headed the opposite direction on Shiloh Road (Virginia 672), state police said.

The accident occurred in Pulaski County at around 10:30 a.m. about two miles south of Shiloh Road's intersection with Interstate 81.

Arehart died at the scene. The driver of the 1995 Chevrolet pickup, William M. Reynolds, 57, of Pulaski, and his wife, Avis, were taken to Pulaski Community Hospital, where they were listed in serious condition with multiple fractures and bruises.

Trooper A.P. Edwards said the Reynolds couple were wearing seat belts when the head-on accident occurred. He said it's uncertain whether or not Arehart had his seat belt on.

A preliminary investigation indicated no reason why Arehart's car crossed the two-lane road's center line and struck the pickup, Edwards said. There were no passengers in his car.

Arehart, who was on furlough, was going shopping and the Reynoldses were going to visit friends when the accident occurred, the trooper said.
