Museum guides

The Roanoke Valley History Museum is looking for volunteers to assist with educational programs, administrative duties, guided tours of the museum and to serve as hosts/hostesses in the museum gallery. All ages are welcome. Previous experience is not required. For additional information contact Rebecca Fitzgerald at 342-5724.

Film showing

The Women's Center at Virginia Tech will show ``Defending Our Lives'' on Monday at noon as part of the Sexual Awareness Month Film Series. The film will look at women imprisoned for killing their abusive partners and examine how the criminal justice system failed the women. The event will be held at the Center in Price House, on the Tech campus. Admission is free. Call 231-7806.

Science museum exhibit

The Science Museum of Western Virginia has a new exhibit, ``Science Circus,'' which runs through Dec. 31. The interactive show has more than 40 exhibits, including a laser radio and optical illusions. Admission is $5 for adults, $4 for seniors and $3 for children 3-12. Hours are 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday through Saturday, 1-5 p.m. on Sunday. For more information, call 342-5710.

Ikebana workshops

New York Ikebana artist Toshiko Shindo Alden will present two demonstrations of her craft of Japanese flower arranging and conduct a workshop in it this month.

Alden will be in the Art Museum of Western Virginia's lecture hall Oct. 20 from 10 a.m. to noon. Her finished arrangements will be on display in the museum for the rest of the weekend. The event is $10 and open to the public.

The second demonstration will be Oct. 21 from 1 to 4 p.m. at the Sake House Restaurant in the Lakeside Shopping Center, Salem. Tickets are $12.50 and include a light Japanese lunch.

Tickets for both events are available at the door or in advance by calling Marianne Miller of the Ikenobo Ikebana Society of Roanoke, 345-8209.

Those with some experience in Ikebana may take part in a workshop with Alden in the museum's lecture hall from 1 to 4 p.m on Oct. 21. The fee is $15. Participants must bring their own equipment. Reservations must be made with Miller by Sunday.

Arts & crafts festival

The Franklin County Chamber of Commerce is accepting applications for the 1995 Fall Arts & Crafts Festival. The festival will be held Nov. 18-19 at Franklin County High School. The deadline for applications is November 9. To receive an application or for more information call 483-9542.

Archaeology convention

The Archaeological Society of Virginia will hold its annual convention today through Sunday at the Southwest Virginia 4-H Education Center in Abingdon. Registration is $15. The center is located at 25236 Hillman Highway. For more information, call 676-6180.
