Employees of Jennings & Webb Inc. trucking company in Covington voted 47-22 Friday to affiliate with the United Paperworkers International Union, a union official said.
M. Glenn Anglin, international representative of the union, said workers sought union representation to raise a variety of issues with management including wages. "They're looking for a voice in the work place, really," Anglin said.
Once the vote is certified by the National Labor Relations Board, Anglin said, he plans to initiate negotiations with company officials. Those officials could not be reached after the vote was announced late Friday afternoon.
Jennings & Webb drivers haul loads to and from the Westvaco Corp. bleached paperboard mill in Covington. The bargaining unit will include drivers, mechanics and their helpers, laborers, inventory clerks and core handlers.

Bankruptcies
Four bankruptcies with business affiliations have been filed in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for Western Virginia at Roanoke. Two of them are personal bankruptcies that the court listed as businesses because they have commercial connections and could be of interest to business creditors and customers.
Acclaim Coal Sales Inc. of Pound filed for reorganization and protection from creditors. The president, Darrell Grigsby, said assets were $374,130 and liabilities were $1,417,565.
Short's Market & Deli Inc., also of Pound, filed for reorganization and protection from creditors. Herbert W. Shortt, president, said assets were $20,000 and liabilities were $39,500.
Michael W. Hall Sr. and Frances M. Hall of Floyd filed for liquidation with assets of $65,978 and liabilities of $102,703. Michael Hall operates Hall's Floor Service.
Harry F. Osborne and Tina M. Osborne of Catawba filed for liquidation, listing assets of $74,292 and liabilities of $102,081. Harry Osborne formerly operated H&S Home Renovations.

Klockner Pentaplast of America Inc., a Gordonsville maker of plastic films for the pharmaceutical, food and printing industries, said Friday it will double the size of its existing 90,000-square-foot plant in Rural Retreat. The company said its decision to invest $26 million in building and equipment and likely create 100 new jobs was the result of the Wythe County Board of Supervisors' decision to lower its machinery and tool tax rate.
Bank of Ferrum on Friday began construction of a branch on U.S. 220 between Boones Mill and Rocky Mount. The Rocky Mount-based bank, a unit of Piedmont BankGroup Inc., expects to open the office in the first quarter next year.

Modine Manufacturing Co., a Racine, Wis., maker of heating and ventilation equipment with operations in Buena Vista, said it has sold its copper-tubing business in Dowagiac, Mich. to National Tube Holding Co. Inc. of Birmingham, Ala. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.
