WHITLEY, PANTHERS POUNCE ON CHOWAN

Ferrum College broke open a tight game with 13 points in the final quarter to defeat Chowan 29-9 on Saturday.

Josh Whitley, knocked out of last week's game, returned to lead the Panthers (5-2) on offense, going 16-for-23 for 174 yards and two touchdowns. He connected with John Poindexter on 12 of those completions for 131 yards and a touchdown. Poindexter's 12 grabs set a school record.

Ferrum punted only once as it controlled the ball for 35:35. The Panthers rolled up 373 yards of total offense - 199 on the ground and 174 through the air.

Ferrum's leading rusher was Eddie Shelton, who ran for 91 yards on 25 carries and a touchdown.

The Braves' (2-5) lone bright spot was running back Johnny Navell, who ran for 61 yards on the afternoon.

The Panthers' defense yielded only 190 yards and created two turnovers.
