UVA-TEXAS SERVED ON SATELLITE DISH

Viewers with satellite-dish access will have the opportunity to watch Virginia's football game Saturday against Texas, a battle of nationally ranked teams.

The game, with a 1 p.m. kickoff, is a Raycom Sports regional production, part of a package the firm has for two Longhorns football dates and 10 basketball games annually.

The UVa-Texas game will air on 21 stations in the Lone Star state. Via satellite, the Texas athletic department reports the game will be available live on KU Band, Galaxy 7, Transponder 1.

There is no commercial telecast of the game in Virginia.

Patrick Henry and Cave Spring advanced to the team finals of the Roanoke Valley District tennis tournament at River's Edge.

Priya Acharya and Kriston Beeler of Pulaski County defeated Patrick Henry's Laura Dickinson and Ann Logan Forsyth 6-3, 4-6, 6-3 to earn the doubles championship.

Patrick Henry beat the Cougars 7-2 and Cave Spring knocked off Franklin County 7-2. The Patriots and Knights will face each other 3 p.m. at River's Edge.

The team winners as well as the individual singles and doubles winners qualify for the Group AAA Northwest Region tournament Oct. 23-25 at C.D. Hylton High. Dickinson of PH won singles Monday by beating the previously undefeated Acharya 2-6, 7-6 (7-1) 6-4.

Cave Spring needed five games to hand Patrick Henry its first Roanoke Valley District volleyball defeat.

The Knights prevailed 15-11,10-15, 15-5, 5-15,15-11 to improve to 12-1 overall, 7-1 in the district. Patrick Henry, which finishes the regular season 11-2, 7-1, will be the top seed in the district tournament Nov. 1-2 at Pulaski County. PH won the tiebreaker between it and the second-seeded Knights by winning five of the nine games the teams played this year.

Northside repeated its Blue Ridge District golf championship by capturing the Region III title Monday at the Beaver Hills Country Club in Collinsville by four strokes over Martinsville.

Rockbridge County's George Pickral grabbed medalist honors with a three-over-par 74. He'll join the Vikings and the Bulldogs at the Group AA state tournament at the Carper's Valley Golf Club in Winchester Monday and Tuesday.

Northside was paced by Jacob Jarrett, who was one stroke back of Pickral, and Jason Orlando with a 77. The Vikings fired a 316 ahead of Martinsville's 320 that was led by Aaron Kovac with a 79.

Other Timesland qualifiers for the state meet are Lord Botetourt's Daryl Byrd, Staunton River's John Childress and Liberty's Lee Fisher. Daryl Perdue of Fieldale-Collinsville failed to make the state when he lost a playoff against Chip Henson of Amherst County after they tied for the final spot with a 78. (Results in Scoreboard)

Glenvar High School graduate and UNC Greensboro freshman golfer Nick Varney shot a three-round total of 215 to finish sixth overall at the Stetson Intercollegiate Tournament in Deland, Fla. UNC Greensboro won the team title.

The Virginia Tech wrestling staff has hired Keith Mourlam, a two-time U.S. Wrestling Federation naitonal champion, as its assistant coach for the 1995-96 campaign. Mourlam spent the past two years as the head coach at Newport News Apprentice School.

Ferrum wrapped up its fall golf season, claiming the team championship of the two-day Ferrum Invitational at the Draper Valley Golf Club in Dublin. The Panthers finished nine strokes better than Bluefield and 11 better than Lynchburg College, the second and third place teams, respectively.

Jody Tootle scored the only goal in the 32nd minute as Maryville downed Roanoke College 1-0 in a non-conference men's soccer game in Maryville. Rick Keeley made six saves for Roanoke (8-7), which was only outshot 14-12.

Oliver Mayo of Virginia Tech won twice in singles on his way to the quarterfinals of the All-American nationals tennis tournament in Austin, Texas.

Mayo defeated Ralph Schloten of the University of Texas-El Paso 6-5, 6-1 in the first round and Anthony Deluise from Middle Tennessee State 6-3, 6-3. He plays today against Stanford's Ryan Wolters.
