EX-COACH ROHRDANZR DIES AT 82

Rudy Rohrdanz, one of Roanoke's top all-time high school football coaches, died in Chattanooga, Tenn., Thursday at the age of 82 after a brief illness.

Funeral services will be held in Chattanooga on Saturday.

Rohrdanz coached for 18 years at Jefferson High in Roanoke, where his teams compiled a 117-38-6 record. In 1957, Rohrdanz' team won a state championship.

Rohrdanz left Roanoke two years later over a dispute of his teaching assignment and moved to Chattanooga, where he coached at City High School.

He played at the University of Alabama during his collegiate career.

An open practice will be held from 2 p.m. until 9 p.m. today in preparation for the third annual New River Valley Chevy Dealers 250-lap Late Model Stock Car Shoot-Out, scheduled Saturday afternoon at New River Valley Speedway.

The practice also is open for the Pure Stock and Legends Cars drivers who will be racing Saturday afternoon following the 3 p.m. LMSC feature.

The grandstands are open to the public free of charge for today's practice session. Infield admission is $10.

Virginia Tech women's soccer goalie Hope Handley has made 150 saves in 14 games and ranks second in the nation in total saves. With four Atlantic 10 contests remaining, she is second only to Robert Morris' Sommer Klarr, who has 178. The sophomore, who averages 10.7 saves per game, could surpass the conference record of 160 set in 1993.

Andy Laverghetta, Bill Schaefer and Vladimir Ciric each scored as the Xavier of Ohio men's soccer team shut out Virginia Tech 3-0 in an Atlantic 10 Conference matchup in Cincinnati. Jon DeLong had seven saves for the Hokies (5-8-2 overall, 4-3-2 Atlantic 10). Xavier is 6-8-1, 5-3-1.

Radford's Jackie Clouse has been named senior women's administrator. She has been with the Highlanders' program since 1983.

At the Evergreen Country Club in Haymarket on Wednesday, Stafford's Ryan Drewniak shot a 4-over-par 76 and beat C.D. Hylton's Michael Hart in a sudden-death playoff on the first hole to win the Group AAA Northwest Region golf tournament.

Hylton took the team championship by seven strokes over Stafford. Hylton compiled a 316. Both teams advance to the Group AAA state tournament at the same course starting Monday.

Cave Spring, the Roanoke Valley District's championship team, finished sixth with a 338, one stroke better than Franklin County in seventh.

Two RVD golfers qualified for the state. The Knights' Ernie Cochran fired a 77 and lost a sudden-death playoff for third place on the second hole against Albemarle's Shane Foster.

Patrick Henry's Mark Baldwin also qualified for the state meet with a 79 and finished in a tie for eighth place.

Cochran was a first-team All-Northwest Region choice, and Baldwin was a second-team selection.
