NARROWS-GALAX CLASH SET

The stage has been set for the game of the year in the Mountain Empire District.

Narrows survived a scare from Fort Chiswell on Thursday, winning 51-45 in a girls' high school basketball game in Narrows. The Green Wave improved to 15-0 overall and 5-0 in league play, and will play host to undefeated Galax (16-0, 5-0) on Tuesday.

But the battle of the unbeatens almost didn't happen.

Fort Chiswell, after trailing 17-9 in the first quarter, rallied to grab a 37-36 lead in the third quarter.

But the Green Wave weathered the storm, thanks to clutch free-throw shooting by Suzanne Webb. Webb, who scored 23 points and grabbed 10 rebounds, made six of eight free-throw attempts late in the fourth quarter to seal the Narrows victory.

Melissa Lucas added 12 points for the Green Wave.

Amber Gunter paced the Pioneers with 13 points, and Christy Farriss scored 12.

Galax 60 Grayson County 42: The Maroon Tide switched to a trapping zone defense in the third quarter to turn a one-point halftime deficit into a Mountain Empire District victory over Grayson County.

Senior Tammy Cox led all scorers with 21 points and 18 rebounds to keep the Maroon Tide (16-0, 5-0) undefeated. Teammate Erin Kyle added 15 points and 17 rebounds, and Candi Owen added 13.

The Blue Devils (2-14, 2-4) were led by Lindsey Carico and Sally Werth, who each scored 14 points.

Rocky Gap 46, Bland 45: In Bland, Hannah Evamson, a senior exchange student, had a chance to win Bland's first game of the season with .5 seconds left, but she missed both free-throw attempts, and Rocky Gap escaped the Rockets with a one-point Mountain Empire District victory.

Bland (0-13, 0-6) had several oppurtunities to win the game but blew its chances five times on the line in the fourth quarter.

The Rockets took an early lead, but the Eagles (2-11, 2-5) battled back in the second quarter behind Michelle Farver's 12 points. She finished the night with a team-high 15. Teammate Melissa Leedy added 12.

Ray Romano led Bland with a game-high 17 points, Patches Umbarger chipped in 12, and Jennifer Winters added 10.

Magna Vista 65 Tunstall 62: In Ridgeway, Magna Vista overcame an 11-point halftime deficit to defeat Tunstall in a Piedmont District game.

Senior Tanesia Kellam scored a game-high 29 points and was 7-of-8 from the free-throw line in the fourth quarter to help seal the victory for the Warriors (10-7, 9-5). Teammate Sandi Reid tossed in 17, 11 in the fourth quarter, and added 12 rebounds.

Melissa Dixon poured in 26 points for the Trojans, and Kim Rich added 12.

Auburn 52, Giles 41: Crystal Moles scored 16 points and Amy Davis added 13 as the Eagles downed the Spartans in a Three Rivers District game at Pearisburg.

Davis scored eight points in the second quarter as Auburn (9-7, 3-2) held Giles without a field goal to take a 19-14 halftime lead. Moles scored 14 of her points in the second half as Auburn pulled away.

Gina Claytor had 19 points to lead Giles (7-9, 0-5).

James River 38, Parry McCluer 35: In Buchanan, James River held onto a four-point halftime lead as the Knights upset Parry McCluer in a Pioneer District game.

Julie Firebaugh led James River (3-12, 3-5) with 11 points. Nakia Burrell chipped in 10 points.

Lindsay Coleman led the Fighting Blues (9-6, 6-3) with 15 points.

Salem 60, Alleghany 43: In Low Moor, Spartans continued to roll through the Blue Ridge District with a victory over Alleghany.

The Spartans (11-3, 5-1) led by five at halftime and then out scored the Mountaineers (9-8, 1-5) by five in the third quarter.

Shelley Johnson and Mandy Williams led the way for Salem, combining for 37 of the team's 60 points.

Williams scored eight of her 18 points in the second quarter.

Alleghany cut the lead to eight points with three minutes remaining, but the Spartans pulled away.

Natasha Chapman led the way for the Mountaineers with 17. Mellisa Page grabbed a game-high 18 rebounds.

Floyd County 93, Christiansburg 33: In Christiansburg, Sarah Connor led all scorers with 23 points as Floyd County rolled to a non-district win.

Julie Sowers added 14 points, and Melissa Cantrell had 13 for the Buffaloes (10-4).

Kim Bishop had 10 points for Christiansburg (6-10).

Liberty 55, Nelson County 29: In Bedford, Liberty overcame a sluggish first quarter to put a Seminole District victory in the books as the Minnettes rolled over visiting Nelson County.

Kellea Whorley led a Liberty second-quarter surge, with seven of her 11 points coming in the period. Sue Cowlbeck led Liberty (13-3, 13-3) with a game-high 19 points and 15 rebounds. Felicia Miller added nine points and eight rebounds.

Nelson County fell to 4-10, 4-10).

Martinsville 60, Fieldale-Collinsville 51: In Martinsville, the Bulldogs won the battle for first place in the Piedmont District with Fieldale-Collinsville, defeating the Cavaliers in overtime.

The Bulldogs (14-3, 12-2) were led by Erica Brandon, who had 21 points. Trecita Holland had 19 points, seven rebounds and 10 steals, and Kesha Mitchell scored 11.

There were no field goals in the overtime period that saw Martinsville outscore the Cavaliers 10-1. Martinsville was 10 of 15 from the free-throw line, and Fieldale-Collinsville (12-5, 11-3) made one of two.

Once Martinsville got a three-point lead in the extra period, it held the ball to pull the Cavaliers out of their zone defense.

Yvonne Hall led the Cavaliers (12-5, 11-3) with 18 points, and T.J. Hayes added 13.

Lord Botetourt 79, Rockbridge County 41: Sarah Hicks single-handedly dealt the fatal blow to Rockbridge (3-11, 1-5) in the first half of a Blue Ridge District contest in Lexington.

The junior scored 12 of Lord Botetourt's 31 points in the first quarter. She scored another six in the second period, giving her 18 points at the half to the Wildcats' 16.

Radford 52, Shawsville 37: In Radford, Charlie Taylor made four 3-pointers and scored a game-high 29 points to lead the Bobcats (12-5, 4-1) over the Shawnees (8-7, 1-4) in the Three Rivers District.

Sarah Hagood scored 13 points for Shawsville.

Rural Retreat 69, John Battle 29: In Bristol, Rural Retreat jumped out to an early lead and never let up as it drilled John Battle (0-14) in a non-district game.

The Indians (10-3) were paced by Kristie Osborne and Nicole Hedrick, who each scored 12 points. Carla Corvin added 11.

The Trojans (0-14) were led by Jessica Shutters, who scored nine points.

Laurel Park 68, Dan River 31: In Ringgold, Laurel Park held an 18 point halftime lead, and that was all it would need, as the Lancers (9-7, 9-5) cruised past Dan River (0-17, 0-14) in a Piedmont District game.

Sherika Watkins led Laurel Park with 18 points, and Toy Perkins and Tonya Martin each added 10.
