SPARTANS ROLL OVER ALLEGHANY

The Salem Spartans continued to roll through the Blue Ridge District with a 60-43 victory over Alleghany in high school girls' basketball action Thursday night.

The Spartans (11-3, 5-1) took a five point halftime lead into the second half to outscore the Mountaineers (9-8, 1-5) 19-14 in the third quarter. Shelley Johnson and Mandy Williams led the way for Salem, combining for 37 of the team's 60 points. Williams scored eight of her 18 points in the second quarter to give Salem the lead. Alleghany cut the lead to eight points with three minutes to go in the game.

Natasha Chapman led the way for the Mountaineers with 17 points, while Mellisa Page grabbed a game-high 18 rebounds.

Bassett 49, Gretna 35: Heather Miller scored a game-high 26 points to lead visiting Bassett over Gretna in a Piedmont District game.

Lynetta Johnson added 10 points for the Bengals.

Amy Cook was the high scorer for Gretna with 10.

Staunton River 67, Appomattox 53: In Appomattox, Erin Wolfe scored 15 points to lead Staunton River (9-6) over Appomattox in a Seminole District Victory.

Staunton River jumped out to an early 19-8 first-quarter lead and never looked back. Stephanie McCarty also added 10 points for the Golden Eagles.

Princess Womack scored 11 points for the Raiders (5-11).

Covington 68, Highland 46: At Highland, Joann Helton and Michelle Jeter outscored Highland by themselves with 27 and 20 points, respectively in Covington's Pioneer District victory. Highland was paced by Tammy Shiflett with 21.
