ALTICE, Lalar Hicks Chitwood, 87, of Rocky Mount, died Saturday evening, October 21, 1995, in the local hospital. She was a daughter of the late Henry and Nannie Hicks. Surviving are two sons and daughters-in-law, Jessie J. and Reva Chitwood, Hardy, James H. and Barbara Chitwood, Glade Hill; a daughter, Judith C. Hodges, Rocky Mount; a stepdaughter and husband, Estelle and Price Wray, Glade Hill; a sister, Ruby L. Hicks, Rocky Mount; four grandchildren; four stepgrandchildren; two great-grandchildren, and four stepgreat-grandchildren. Several nieces and nephews also survive. Funeral services will be conducted from Flora Funeral Chapel at 11 a.m. Tuesday, with the Rev. Charles Comer and the Rev. Steve Witt officiating. Interment will follow in Franklin Memorial Park. Friends may call after 2 p.m. Monday, with the family receiving friends from 7 to 9 p.m. at Flora Funeral Service, 342 South Main Street, Rocky Mount.

BAYNE, Carl S., 74, of Clifton Forge, Va., died Sunday, October 22, 1995. Graveside service, Tuesday, 11 a.m., Central Advent Christian Cemetery. Arrangements by Nicely Funeral Home.

BEHL, Joseph William, Sr., 66, of Roanoke, died suddenly on Saturday, October 21, 1995. He was born in Philadelphia, Pa., and attended the University of Pennsylvania, Wharton School of Business, where he graduated summa cum laude. He moved to Roanoke in 1959 and retired from Norfolk Southern Railroad after 40 years of service. Mr. Behl was involved with the finance department and was the manager of investments when he retired. He was a member of Our Lady of Nazareth Catholic Church since 1959. He was a lover of classical music and was involved in the opera society. He assisted and donated his time in establishing the pension plan for the City of Roanoke. He also donated his time to the Roanoke County Parks and Recreation Department helping the underprivileged. He was an avid sportsman as a young man. He was offered a major league contract with the Brooklyn Dodgers. Continuing with a lifetime of sports in his latter years, he participated in the Senior Olympics in tennis. In addition to his many other community activities, he was a devoted family man and is survived by his wife, Hazel G. Behl, Roanoke; children and their spouses, Dr. Joseph W. Jr., M.D., and Elaine Behl, Harrisonburg, Kenneth C. Behl, Hazel Trivett, Dennis S. and Sharon M. Behl, Roanoke, Deborah B. and William Harper Barney, Lynchburg, Timothy M. and Leah M. Behl, Roanoke; seven grandchildren, Maria Nicole Trivett, Emily W. Behl, Dennis (Austin) Behl II, William Claybourne Behl, Tyler Derek Behl, Anna Kristen Barney and Timothy Mitchell Behl, and three brothers and sisters-in-law, Dennis and Alice Behl, Florida, Edward and Wilma Behl, Pennsylvania, Theodore Behl, Pennsylvania. A funeral mass of the Resurrection will be held at Our Lady of Nazareth Catholic Church at 1 p.m. Tuesday, with the Rev. Robert Cummins officiating. Interment will be private. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be made to Our Lady of Nazareth Catholic Church. Arrangements are by Oakey's South Chapel.

CALDWELL, Ruth Estelle, 75, of Catawba, died Saturday, October 21, 1995. She is survived by four daughters and sons-in-law, Noline and Frederick Jones, Wanda and Edward Jones, both of Catawba, Lucy Jean and Leonard Huffman, Salem, Joyce and Randall Horne, Troutville; one sister, Mae Womak, Salem; 18 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; 1 great-great-grandchild; and 3 stepgrandchildren. The funeral will be conducted Tuesday at 2 p.m. at New Canterbury Church, with John Abbott officiating. Burial will be in the family cemetery. Visitation will be Monday from 7 until 9 p.m. at Boitnott Funeral Home, New Castle.

COLEMAN, Thomas Emanuel, Sr., 78, of Roanoke, died Wednesday, October 18, 1995. He is survived by two sons, Thomas Coleman Jr., Roanoke, and William Coleman of Glendale, Md.; two daughters, Vivian Flowers of Washington D.C., and Corrie Baxter, Roanoke; eight grandchildren, Quintina Adams, Walter Goodrich, Harold Anderson, Brandon Broadley, Anthony Woods, Ron Flowers Jr., William Coleman, Darius Coleman; eight great-grandchildren; two daughters-in-law, Mary and Sylvia Coleman; two sons-in-law, Andre Baxter and Ron Flowers; two devoted sisters-in-law, Theresa and Christine Coleman; a host of nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be Tuesday at 11 a.m. at the Fizer Funeral Home Chapel, with the Rev. Dwight O. Steele officiating. Burial in Sherwood Memorial Park. HORNE, Bernice Clinebell, 80, of Richmond and formerly a life-long resident of Roanoke, passed away Sunday, October 22, 1995. Mrs. Horne was a longtime member of First Baptist Church and was a retired technician from C&P Telephone Co. She was the widow of Robert Lewis Horne, and is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Barry W. and Mary Horne, Richmond; two grandsons, Jeffrey Patrick and Andrew Neil Horne, both of Richmond. Funeral services will be held at Oakey's South Chapel at 11 a.m. Tuesday, October 24, 1995, with the Rev. John Cochran officiating. Interment will follow in Evergreen Burial Park. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to the Alzheimer's Association or the Central Virginia Chapter of Autism Society of America in her memory. IRVINE, Anna Josephine Bond, 83, of Roanoke and formerly of Washington, D.C., passed away Saturday, October 21, 1995. She was born in Laurel, Md., on April 17, 1912, a daughter of the late George M. and Dorathea Lin denkohl Bond. She was the widow of Walter Thomas Irvine. She was a charter member of the S.P.C.A. and a member of St. James Episcopal Church, and was a retired licensed beautician. Surviving are her daughters and son-in-law, Paula Reynolds, Owings Mills, Md., JoAnn Irvine Criscione and Chris Criscione, Roanoke, and her granddaughters, Leslie Reynolds, Owings Mills, Md., and Reagan Nichole Myles, Roanoke. Funeral services will be held at St. James Episcopal Church (Delray Street, N.W.) at 11 a.m. Tuesday, October 24, 1995, with Father Anthony Seel officiating. Interment is private. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to the Adult Day Care of Roanoke Valley or the Alzheimers Association. KEITH, Virgie I., Dr., 73, of Radford, died Sunday, October 22, 1995, at her residence. She was born August 28, 1922, in Willis, Va., the daughter of the late Greene T. and Ocie A. Keith. She received her B.S. degree from Indiana Wesleyan University, Marion, Indiana, her M.S. degree from VPI & SU, Blacksburg, and her Ed. degree from the University of Virginia in Charlottesville. She was a former teacher of mathematics at Blacksburg and Radford High Schools. She was a mathematics and science supervisor in the Pulaski County school system. She was adjunct instructor at VPI & SU, the University of Virginia, and New River Community College. She was a member of the Delta Kappa Gamma. Also a member of the Pulaski County, District M, and the Virginia Retired Teachers Associations. She was a member of the Christiansburg Wesleyan Church, serving in many capacities in the local and state Wesleyan churches. She was selected at a distinguished alumnus of Indiana Wesleyan University, and was selected as an outstanding alumnus of Radford High School. She was given the special ""Honoring Our Own"" award by Alpha Lambda Chapter Delta Kappa Gamma. Her biography appeared in the World's Who's Who of Women, Who's Who of American Women, Outstanding Educators of America, Who's Who in Virginia, the International Who's Who of Intellectuals, and Personalities of the South. She had been recently elected president of the Virginia District M Retired Teachers Association. Surviving are several aunts and uncles and cousins. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the DeVilbiss Funeral Chapel, with the Rev. David Hurd officiating. Interment will follow in the Highland Memory Gardens. The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Christiansburg Wesleyan Church New Sanctuary Fund.

MAXWELL, Patricia Slater, 72, of Salem, died Friday, October 20,1995. She was the widow of A. G. ``Gip"" Maxwell Sr. and a member of Salem Presbyterian Church. She leaves behind three children, A. G. Maxwell Jr., Salem, Glenn S. Maxwell and his wife Ellen H. Maxwell, Roanoke and W. Hampton Maxwell and his wife, Donna D. Maxwell, Salem; six grandchildren, Shannon M. Albright, San Antonio, Texas, Mary Maxwell, Colleyville, Texas, Jennifer Maxwell and Sarah Maxwell, both of Roanoke, Christopher H. Maxwell and Lindsay A. Maxwell, both of Salem; and one great-granddaughter, Jourden Albright, San Antonio, Texas. Graveside services will be conducted 11 a.m. Monday, October 23, 1995, in Sherwood Memorial Park by the Rev. MITCHELL, Virginia Dolores, of Salem, died Friday, October 20,1995. She was the wife of Freeman Henry Mitchell and had retired in 1987 from the Veteran's Administration Medical Center after 17 years. Other survivors include her children, David H. Mitchell, Roanoke and Charlotte Ann Ericson, Carlsbad, Calif.; and two brothers, Bill Ray Addison, Corbin, Ken., and Carl Vernon Addison, Nitro, W.Va. MULFORD, Brandon Thomas, age 4, of Pembroke, died Saturday morning, October 21, 1995, from injuries sustained in an automobile accident. Born on January 27, 1991, in Blacksburg, he was a son of Dannielle Mulford of Pembroke and John Aaron Sexton of Roanoke, and a stepson of John Davis of Pembroke. He also is survived by his sister, Demi Davis, and a brother, Daniel Davis, both of Pembroke; a stepbrother, Jefrey W. Davis, Radford; his maternal grandparents, Cheryl M. and David Handwork, Blacksburg, and his paternal grandmother, Ethel Collins, Pearisburg. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday, October 24, 1995, in the Kendall Funeral Home Chapel in Pembroke, with the Rev. Terry Eversole officiating. NICHOLS, Mary Grim Sears, 74, of Vinton, died Saturday, October 21, 1995. Mrs. Nichols was a member of Beaverdam Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her grandson, Thomas Sears, and is survived by her husband, Luther J. PARKER, Ida Jane Leftwich, 90, passed away in a local nursing home on Saturday, October 21, 1995. She was the widow of Nelson Parker. She was also preceded in death by two sons. She was a member of High Street Baptist Church. ROOP, Joel Brian, (``Joey""), 18, of 53 Douglas Avenue, Dublin, passed away Saturday, October 21, 1995, in Roanoke Memorial Hospital as the result of an automobile accident. He was born on November 11, 1976, in Radford, the son of Joseph Eugene (``Joe"") Roop and Sarah Diane Young Roop of Dublin. In addition to his parents, he is survived by three sisters, Lori Ann Roop, Tabitha Lee Roop and Amanda Gwen Roop of Dublin; his maternal grandparents, Charlie Clifford Young and Lorina May Osborne Young, Dublin; his paternal grandfather, Earl Aster Roop, Pulaski; his paternal grandmother, Clara Jewell Smith Roop, Dublin; his maternal great-grandmother, Annie May Moore Osborne, Buchanan; a special friend, Mary McPeak Bolt, Pulaski, and a number of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins. Born on April 15, 1907, she was the daughter of the late Waymon and Ellen Cook McKinney.
