60 BUCKS AND A TUX (OR EVENING OUTFIT) ADMIT YOU TO BALL|

Dust off your dancing shoes. It's almost time for the Blue Ridge Ball.

The sixth annual event, sponsored by the Board of Directors of the New River Valley Friends of the Roanoke Symphony, will be held on Saturday, Oct. 28.

Lisa Wright and Leigh Powell Roederer are co-chairwomen.

The purpose of the ball is to generate funds for local concerts and educational programs sponsored by the organization.

The theme of this year's ball is "An Autumn Night's Dream." Festivities begin at 7 p.m. at the German Club in Blacksburg.

The evening begins with a social hour and is followed by dancing and an elegant dinner, created by Diane Whitehead of Catering Unlimited.

Music of a wide variety for dancing and listening will be performed by "Sunset Drive."

A silent auction will be conducted throughout the evening. Items to be auctioned include timeshares, artwork, radio advertising and more, Roederer said.

Host for the formal, black-tie event will be meteorologist Bill Meck. He will serve as master of ceremonies.

Tickets for the event are $60 per person.

To make advance reservations, call Al Marsh at 552-3779.

The Friends group has three main goals: to provide varied, quality music experiences to children throughout the New River Valley; to enhance music education programs in the schools; and to encourage the music activities as part of life-long learning.

Almost a quarter of the funds generated by the Friends group goes to New River Valley education programs, including in-school concerts and artists-in-residence programs.

The artists program provides continuing music education to one grade level over a four-year period where musicians come in to work with students and teachers.

Third graders at McHarg Elementary School in Radford are in their second year of the program; fourth graders at Falling Branch Elementary in Christiansburg are in their third.

The Friends group sponsors about 20 in-school concerts a year in Montgomery County and Radford City schools. As time and funds permit, the concerts will be extended to neighboring school divisions such as Giles, Pulaski and Floyd counties, according to the group's literature.
