NEW RIVER PEOPLE

Beverly Cobb and Lois Hinkle, fiber artists, displayed their wearable art recently at the Reynolds Homestead's "Steppin' Out" exhibition in Critz.

Blacksburg Southside Garden Club members received awards for their entries in the Standard Flower Show Oct. 4, at the Donaldson Brown Hotel and Conference Center at Virginia Tech. Mrs. E. V. Russell Jr. won a tri-color award for her design, "Solitary Splendor." Mrs. Jerald Robinson won the creativity award for "Remembrance of Summer" and a blue ribbon for "Apples are Ripe." Mrs. Daniel Ludwig received two blue ribbons, one for "Autumn's Palette" in tri-color and one in creativity for "Autumnal Melody." Mrs. Carl Witherspoon received a blue ribbon in tri-color for "Bouquet Garni."

The competition for the sweepstakes award in Horticulture resulted in a tie between Mrs. Ludwig and Mrs. Robert Hendricks. Each also won an award of merit for their specimens. Mrs. L. E. Mosley won an award of merit for horticulture specimens as well as the horticulture excellence award for her potted fern.

Members winning blue ribbons for horticulture were Mrs. Beliveau, Mrs. Thomas Caceci, Mrs. R.Q. Cannell, Mrs. Hendricks, Mrs. Ludwig, Mrs. Moseley, Mrs. John Muench, Mrs. Robinson, Mrs. E. V. Russell Jr., Mrs. R. L. Simpson and Mrs. Witherspoon.

A painting by Christiansburg artist Jean Nelson is featured in a book, "The Best of Watercolor," published this month by Rockport Publishers. The book showcases 250 award-winning watercolors by artists from the U.S. and Canada.

Scott Sink of Blacksburg participated in the 75th annual National 4-H Dairy Cattle Judging Contest at the World Dairy Expo in Madison, Wisc., Oct. 5.
