Arena set to lead U.S. team
A news conference has been scheduled for 2 p.m. today at which Bruce Arena is expected to be named coach of the under-23 national team that will represent the United States in the Summer Olympics.
The announcement has been scheduled for RFK Stadium, leading to speculation that Arena also will be named to head the new Major League Soccer franchise in Washington.
There is a possibility that Arena, under whose direction Virginia has won four consecutive Division I championships, could take a leave of absence from UVa to coach the Olympic team and work in an as-yet undetermined capacity for MSL.
The Cavaliers are 13-0-2 this season and are ranked No. 1 in the country.
Arena took over at Virginia in 1978 and has compiled a record of 287-57-32 in 17-plus seasons. Virginia won its first NCAA title in 1989, lost in the quarterfinals the following year and has won the title every year since. Last season, the Cavaliers beat Indiana 1-0 for the championship.
Arena's program has produced 26 all-Americans and several national players of the year, including Tony Meola, the goalkeeper on the 1994 U.S. World Cup team, and World Cup team midfielders John Harkes (1990, 1994) and Claudio Reyna (1994).
Three Old Dominion Athletic Conference tournaments begin today. Roanoke College will play host host to a quarterfinal field hockey match as the No.2-seeded Maroons face No.7 Sweet Briar.
The No.6 Roanoke men's soccer team is at No.3 Randolph-Macon. Washington and Lee, the No.7 seed is at No.2 Emory & Henry.
Bill Lindsey, a 49-year-old salesman from Roanoke, took home a world title from the World Drug-Free Powerlifting Federation championships in St.Louis this past weekend.
Lindsey lifted 314 pounds in the bench press to capture a Masters Division championship in the 45-49 age group.
Lindsey is a reigning state masters champion, but had not previously competed in the world event.
``It's the first time it's been held in the United States in several years,'' said Lindsey, who trains at the Roanoke Athletic Club.
Lindsey is entered in the American Drug-Free Powerlifting Association championships next month in Denver. He was third in that event last year.
