SHAWSVILLE TOPS KNIGHTS 53-46

Shawsville fell behind early, but a smothering press and several strong scoring efforts led the Shawnees past James River 53-46 on Monday in a non-district girls' high school basketball game at Shawsville.

Three of four Shawsville scorers, Sarah Hagood (24), Megan Forster (15) and Beth Burdette (10) were in double figures.

Heather Vines had 15 for the Knights (3-13) and Nakia Burrell added 10.

Shawsville improved to 9-7.

Covington 56, Craig County 18: Covington's defensive pressure limited the Rockets' shot-making opportunities and Michelle Jeter and Joann Helton took advantage of the Rockets' propensity to foul by going a combined 15-for-25 from the free-throw line en route to the Pioneer District victory.

Jeter had 18 points, Helton 17, and Charity Tyree 10 for Covington (8-9 overall, 5-4 in the district).

Staunton River 46, Rustburg 31: Beth Davis scored 13 points and Stephanie McCardy added 12 points and 11 rebounds as the Golden Eagles downed the Devils in a Seminole District contest at Rustburg.

Staunton River (10-6, 10-6) took a one-point lead in the first quarter and outscored Rustburg 17-8 in the second period and 14-7 in the fourth en route to victory.

Hollie Franklin had 18 points for Rustburg (8-8, 8-8).

Fort Chiswell 54, Rocky Gap 37: Fort Chiswell and Rocky Gap mimicked each other's offenses in the first half, but the Pioneers consistently got better as the game went on, downing the Eagles in a Mountain Empire District game.

The teams combined for the 33 points in the first quarter but went cold in the next eight minutes. They combined for seven points in the second quarter.

Amber Gunter hit six 3-pointers and finished with 20 points to lead all scorers. Kristen Harmon added 14 and a game-high eight rebounds for the Pioneers.

Amanda Clark led Rocky Gap with 16.

Carroll County 79, Pocahontas 35: At Pocahontas, Carroll County's press blew open the game in the first quarter and the Cavaliers cruised, handing the host team its 21st straight loss.

Chelsie Stoneman had 14 points to lead four double-figure scorers for Carroll County (12-6). April Clark sank three 3-pointers on the way to scoring 16 points for Pocahontas (0-15).
