HIGHLANDERS PLACE 2ND IN GROUP A GOLF

Tommy Lesperance of Glenvar finished second overall, pacing the Highlanders to a second-place finish Tuesday in the Group A golf championship in Hot Springs.

Stonewall Jackson-Mount Jackson, paced by Troy Copenhaver's 4-over-par 76, breezed to a 20-stroke victory over defending champion Glenvar.

Stonewall Jackson had a 329-333-662 for the two-day, 36-hole tournament over The Homestead's Lower Cascades course. In the 30 years the school has played in the tournament, the Generals have won seven titles.

Rhodes Ritenour was second low for Stonewall Jackson with a 79, while Chris Carson and Chris Maguigan each shot 89.

Glenvar, following a 346 Monday, shot a 336 Tuesday for 682 total. Giles finished third with a 691.

Eric Hook of Highland won the individual title, the first for a student from the school. He shot a par 72 Monday and a 74 Tuesday.

Lesperance placed second in the individual competition with a 78-73-151 total. In third place was Copenhaver with 156.

In other high school golf, Patrick Henry's Mark Baldwin shot an 83 to card a two-day score of 172 and Cave Spring junior Ernie Cochran fired a 91 for a total of 181 on the final day of the Group AAA state golf tournament at Virginia Oaks Golf Course in Gainesville.

The University of South Carolina-Aiken scored a two-day total tournament record 2-under-par 574 to win the Chris Cothran/Radford Intercollegiate golf tournament held at Draper Valley Golf Club.

The Pacers finished 20 strokes ahead of second-place Virginia's Blue squad with Charleston Southern finishing third at 599, Appalachian State at fourth with 606 and fifth-place George Mason at 614. Radford came in seventh place at 620.

South Carolina-Aiken's Brooks Blackburn fired a 5-under-par 67 in the final round to finish with a two-day total of 4-under-par 140.

The top four seeds advanced to the semifinals in the first round of the Old Dominion Athletic Conference men's soccer tournament.

Top-seeded Virginia Weslyan shutout Guilford 2-0. Wesleyan will play Hampden-Sydney on Friday, a 3-2 winner over Eastern Mennonite. The other semifinal pits Emory & Henry, a 5-1 winner over Washington and Lee, over Randolph-Macon, which beat Roanoke 1-0. The Maroons, who finished their season with an 8-9 record, got four saves from goalie Rick Keeley.

Top-seeded Randolph-Macon crushed Sweet Briar 8-0 to cruise into the ODAC women's soccer semifinals as the first round of the ODAC Tournament got under way.

In other first-round games, Virginia Wesleyan blanked Lynchburg 5-0. The Marlins will play Randolph-Macon on Friday in one semifinal. Roanoke blew out Randolph-Macon Woman's College 8-0 and will meet Washington and Lee, a 1-0 winner over Guilford.

Both semifinals games will be at Randolph-Macon on Friday.

Kelley Dize scored the only goal as Sweet Briar downed Roanoke College 1-0 in an Old Dominion Athletic Conference field hockey tournament quarterfinal match in Salem.

Stanislav Licul and Chris Chladek each scored first-half goals as Virginia Tech came from behind to down VMI 4-1 in a non-conference men's soccer game in Blacksburg.

The Keydets (7-10) took a 1-0 lead on Trey Kirby's goal before Licul and Chladek gave Tech the lead. The Hokies (7-8-2) got another goal from Licul in the second half along with a goal from Bobby Warnick to provide the final margin.

VMI assistant lacrosse coach Spencer Gill has earned a roster spot on the Charlotte Cobras, a Major Indoor Lacrosse League franchise. Gill is a 1993 VMI graduate and becomes the first Keydet to play in the MILL.

Patrick County's Aaron Whitwell and Gretna's Laura Anderson took home the individual titles at the Piedmont District cross country championship held at Gretna.

Dan River won the boys' team title with 42 points after placing three runners in the top 10. Jeremy McCormick finished second, Larry McDaniel came in third and Nathan Brown finished eighth to lead the Wildcats. Patrick County, led by Whitwell, who was the runner of the year, finished second in the team competition.

Anderson, Amy Doss and Melissa Ingram led Gretna to the girls' team title by taking the top three spots and having five runners finish in the top 10. Anderson was the runner of the year.

Patrick Henry's girls tennis team fell to C.D. Hylton 5-4 in the Northwest Region semifinals in Woodbridge.

The Patriots got singles wins from Ann-Logan Forsythe at No.4, a 6-3, 4-6, 6-1 victor over Katie Westerhoff, and at No.5, where Erin Rutherford downed Meghann Hughes 7-5, 3-6, 6-4.

Patrick Henry won two of the three doubles matches. At No.1, Forsythe and Lauren Dickinson defeated Westerhoff and Brooke Warner 6-3, 6-1. Sarah McCorkle and Betsy Roberts won at No.2 by downing Stephanie Meriwether and Emily Huggins 6-3, 6-3.

Hylton will face E.C. Glass today in the region finals.
